Extract from the CURRENT HOUSE HANSARD Database Date: 13 February 1997

Ms Hanson asked the Minister for Health and Family Services, upon notice, on 20 November 1996: "Do applicants for refugee status receive Medicare benefits."

Dr Wooldridge--"The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:"

"Applicants for refugee status that meet the definition of `Australian resident' in the Health Insurance Act 1973 are eligible for Medicare and do, therefore, receive Medicare benefits. To meet the definition of `Australian resident' refugee applicants must hold a valid temporary visa; be an applicant for permanent residence; and either be authorised to work or have a spouse, parent or child that is an Australian citizen or the holder of a permanent visa."
