Why is Australia involved in the MAI?

Senator Cook, then ALP's Minister for Trade, represented Australia at the OECD Ministers’ conference in May 1995 when it was decided to commence MAI negotiations.

Since this time bureaucrats from the Australian Department of Treasury have been in Paris deciding our future and participating in this all empowering treaty where the multinationals are proposing to:

• sue our government through an international court if they feel that they haven't had a fair go,
• import cheaper labour into Australia,
• increase media ownership without our ability to restrict them,
• import goods from overseas if they are cheaper than Australian equivalents,
• intimidate small local authorities through their sheer financial muscle.

The Coalition government have embraced the MAI as "good" for Australia.

Australian labour are the only people on the so-called "level playing field".

The global economy and globalisation
