There was a classic case of reverse racism displayed by the local Ipswich newspaper, The Queensland Times, yesterday.
The Headline: Hanson Book Protest
Here are some extracts from the lead story on the front page by chief reporter Mark Strong:
Ipswich regional ATSIC head Patricia Thompson has withdrawn her son in protest from a kindergarten run by the author of a newly released biography on Pauline Hanson.
Ms Thompson said yesterday she had withdrawn her son on Friday over concerns that the book displayed mean-spirited attitudes towards Aboriginal residents of Ipswich and the broader community. Ms Thompson said she was now concerned that portions of the book that broadbrushed all Aborigines could expose her son to unwelcome attention.
Dr Dodd said yesterday that Ms Thompsons decision caused her sorrow, because she had given Ms Thompsons son excellent care. She said she had also not known that Ms Thompson, the chairwoman of ATSICs South-East Queensland Region, had held that position.
Ms Thompson said she would take a note down tomorrow to the workers, because they have been good.
I hope that none of them share the views that these people) Member for Oxley Pauline Hanson and her biographer, Helen Dodd) have.
Ms Thompson said she had not yet read the book, which was released on Friday, but was relying on the information of others.
I call it reverse racism quite simply because the coverage that is given to a story based on heresay and innuendo.
Ms Thompson has been quick to castigate Pauline Hanson in the past for allegedly being "Uniformed and ignorant" and here she is not having read the book telling everybody that it is racist, broadbrushes Aborigines and is "mean-spirited".
And what a way to stop your son getting "unwelcome attention" - tell the world... and I bet the article will be followed up with Mrs Thompson's mandatory letter in The Queensland Times slamming Pauline Hanson and, this time, Dr Helen Dodd.
This article is all about damaging Dr Dodd's business - it is an act of deceitful petty politics because, I would suggest, Ms Thompson might be looking for another job if One Nation does well in the next election - because if they do ATSIC will probably be disbanded - and Ms Thompson knows it.
A disturbing video has been made by Pauline Hanson
who has been the target of a number of death threats. In the video
Ms Hanson states, "Fellow Australians, if you are seeing me now, it means
I have been murdered."
Excerpts of the video will be played during an interview by Hanson with
Channel 7's Witness programme at 9.30pm tonight. The video was taped
by Channel 7 on the condition that it is only aired if she is killed. Ms Hanson is Australia's most protected politician with several Federal Police who accompany her everywhere ensuring that she is not the victim of an assassination attempt.
"There was always a chance that I would be killed and many believe this would
be a mortal blow to what began with my election. You must not allow this
to happen," Ms Hanson says to her supporters.
"For the sake of our children and our children's children, you must fight
on. Do not let my passing distract you for one moment. We must go forward
together as Australians. Our country is at stake."
Last night Pauline Hanson's political adviser, David Oldfield, said, "It's
not like it hasn't already happened (Cabramatta MP John Newman was the first Federal politician to be murdered in an execution style murder). The essence of the tape is to push
supporters to keep going without her, to understand that what she started
will have to be finished by them."
Witness executive producer Anthony McClellan said yesterday "If she has an
untimely death she has requested that we broadcast her entire address. We
are holding in safe-keeping the tape that she has made."
Well we have sold of Telstra, we have sold off the
Commonwealth Bank, our newspapers are owned by foreigners and
now Prime Minister John Howard has opened the door to foreigners to buy our
major Australian banks.
This on a day that Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad hit the nail
on the head at the APEC Forum when he said that "Free markets are a recipe
for slavery".
For once I agree with Gareth Evans (who we are going to do a very interesting
expose on shortly) who said, "Labor would apply a national interest test
to any proposed takeover of an Australian Bank. However, we would find it
very difficult to accept that a foreign takeover of one of our major banks
was in the national interest."
The Wik/native title debate is causing a major
shake up
in Australian politics - Prime Minister John Howard's handling of the issue
being the major concern.
In the latest NewsPoll support for the Democrats has plummeted since Cheryl
Kernot defected to the Australian Labor Party.
