International:

Meet Mr 15% as Charlie Perkins, the verbose defender of Aboriginal native title, is now being called. I was one of those who stood on the fence, unsure about Mr Perkins, but no more. In a slanted example of what his nemesis, Pauline Hanson, calls the Aboriginal industry, the financial gain that he is intending to make through his high profile public position and through the company Sancave Pty Ltd sums up the type of exploitation that has white Australia up in arms.

His demands, exposed yesterday, that a major mining company pay Au$120 million in exchange for guarantees that native title would not be pursued is a sickening example of all that is wrong with this part of our community.

While the Aboriginal people Perkins rightly squeals so loudly for are living in poverty, he is creaming off millions of potential dollars that should go back to the community not to Sancave or Mr 15%. In the case referred to yesterday Perkins stood to make Au$18 million while the Sancave Pty Ltd company would obviously make a killing... All Aboriginal land councils tied up to Sandcave Pty Ltd have to give two years notice if they want to break the contract.

It is no secret that Charlie Perkins has been very active in mineral rich north-west Queensland this year, liasing with potential native title claimants. He has become known in the region as Mr 15%.

Mr Perkins response to the accusations is quite sad, "Nobody works for nothing. If you go to the dentist you pay, you get paid for your work, and so should everybody else."

Quite so Mr Perkins but I don't pay the dentist the equivalent of Au$1 million a visit.

"Colourful" con man Peter Foster spoke about his false passport from behind bars on the Gold Coast yesterday. It seems that "Police handed him the fake passport". In his fertile little mind he alleges that British Police enlisted him to assist in a covert operation to undercover corruption at Sudbury Prison, in central England, where he was an inmate.

The real story is that he has been the subject of a man hunt across the British Isles since his escape from Sudbury Prison.

Political:

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) said yesterday that it had no intention of paying the Au$89,000 bill for damages caused by members during the rally outside Parliament in August dismissing the demand as a political stunt.

ACTU President Jennie George has accused Prime Minister John Howard and Industrial Relations Minister Peter Reith of helping to organise the bill which was sent by the ACT government.

The bill lists costs which include a demand of Au$1,992.75 for catering; Au$71,675.50 for overtime; and Au$1,341.91 for damage to Australian Federal Police property - including uniforms.

Ms George said, "They can pursue me to hell and high water for these fictitious claims that I am not responsible for and have no intention of paying."

Business:

Looks like old war horse Nobby Clark, outgoing Chairman of Coles Myer, put someone's nose out of joint. At a board meeting yesterday he was replaced by Stan Wallis. Clark has advised that he will leave the board of Coles in July next year.

In other moves the positions of vice-chairman and deputy chairman have been scrapped further weakening Solomon Lew's once all powerful position in the company. Lew remains a director of the company.

Two new influential representatives join the board, Brierley Investments and the Myer Family with each holding about an 8% stake in Coles Myer.

The changes must gain the approval of shareholders but this appears to be a formality.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another day in the Global Office... it started raining this morning, light pleasant drizzle with intermitent breaks... guess we will have the cockatoos around later at the feed tray - after all it's dry under the deck!
