International:

Australia will be asked to take part in peace talks in East Timor. The peace talks are being brokered by non other than South Africa's President Nelson Mandela...

If Canberra fails to pick up the invitation the United States will be asked to lead the way in the multicultural talks which are backed by the European union.

East Timorese independence leader and Nobel Peace prize winner Jose Ramos Horte said yesterday that he planned to ask Foreign Minister Alexander Downer to take part in the united front.

Ramos is scheduled to meet with Downer on the 26th October... let's hope he can keep his foot out of his mouth.

A company linked to non other than outspoken activist Charlie Perkins (the fellow who has been travelling with and debating Pauline Hanson) has demanded Au$120 million be paid to an Aboriginal group in return for allowing the Ernst Henry mine go ahead.

The company Sancave Pty Ltd, owned by Perkins, has an agreement with Aboriginal organisations in north-west Queensland to take 15% of any benefits the groups receive.

MIM Holdings Limited partners in the giant copper-gold mine with Savage Resources Limited told the Australian Stock Exchange yesterday the Au$120 million sought by Sancave was to ensure no native title claim was made on the mine or its water supply.

The two companies developing the Au$400 million mine 120 km east of Mt Isa rejected the proposal as "not an acceptable basis for negotiating".

They said the Mitakoodi Juhnjlar Aboriginal Corporation had advised Ernst Henry it intended to lodge a native title claim over the mine site next week.

Queensland Premier Rob Borbidge said last night that threatening to use a land claim as a launching pad against the project "smacked of blackmail".

Spot on I reckon. Beginning to see Perkin's financial interest in bring Hanson down.

Political:

Federal Parliament looks likely to turn down the Northern Territory's euthanasia bill. The majority of MPs surveyed advising that when the Private Member's Bill by Liberal Victorian back bencher, Kevin Andrews, calling for euthanasia to be outlawed is put to the floor that they will approve it.

Business:

Optus Communications Limited's plan for an Au$4.5 billion float by the end of the year has been stopped in the courts.

The action was brought by television operator Channel Seven who are unhappy about Kerry Packer's company Publishing and Broadcasting Limited's tie up with Optus Vision in the deal...

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another day in the "big smoke"... beautiful ouside. Have a Wesbster day...
