International:

This week and next Australia has been and will be invaded by high profile Americans. Currently we have "wacko" Jacko running around Sydney making the headlines. Yesterday he married Debbie Rowe in the Sheraton on the Park Hotel in Sydney because "Australia is the only place in the world he can make a new start".

In all the photographs he looks like a bandit with a scarf, normally black, wrapped around his nose and mouth. Must be a cover up of things gone wrong after having one to many surgical attempts at mirroring the look of Diana Ross.... or maybe he just doesn't like our Australian air!

On the other hand Star Fleet Commander Bill Clinton is about to crash land on the northern shores of Queensland with his wife Hillary in tow (or should it be the other way around?)

The content of his speech to the people of Australia, destined to be given on Wednesday, is the worst kept secret in the land. It promises continued friendship and co-operation between the two nations, especially in the Asia Pacific region.

Yeah sure, as long as our farmers don't undercut the Yanks on beef or wheat in the region because then the true colours really show through!

The Clinton's will spend two nights at Port Douglas in Northern Queensland and two nights in Sydney... they might even bump into "wacko" Jacko!

The Presidential security machine has pretty well taken over the town...

The Chinese in the meantime (several thousand miles away) are said to feel threatened by the comments that the security ties between Canberra and Washington may be upgraded during the visit by Clinton.

Political:

Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Herron yesterday unveiled an ambitious plan seeking solutions for the problems of indigenous Australians.

Herron said the government had spent Au$12 billion over the last 12 years on specific programmes for indigenous Australians with little to show in material progress.

The main points in the speech were:

Aboriginal leaders immediately attacked the plan with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) chairwoman Lois O'Donoghue accusing the Coalition government of putting a "white fella solution" in place.

Her main concern was that the plan came without any consultation with the Aboriginal leaders on important issues.

In his policy speech Herron said that Australian's should not feel guilty about the "sins of their fathers" for the past treatment of Aborigines.

Acting ATSIC Chairman, "Sugar Ray" Robinson, criticised the government saying the indigenous rights agenda had been lost.

As a postscript to this story it seems rather strange that the small business support area will stop in March because the government has abolished the Business Advice for Rural Areas Program.

Hardly seems worth bringing it up as a policy intiative under those circumstances.

You say:

Subject: Freedom of speech

Dear editor,

As a migrant to this country, and someone who has fought in two wars (police actions, Borneo and Vietnam) on behalf of my new home in defence of the freedoms that all free peoples should enjoy, the main one being the freedom of speech, why then is this society that I have fought for being gagged and prevented from hearing the viewpoints of Adams and Irvine? Thank God for the honest politicians like Hanson. I also notice that the Singaporean Army assaults have now died a natural death once Aboriginies were alleged to have been the instigators. To all those bleeding hearts who think that Aboriginies are pacifists and the underdog, I suggest that you go for a walk through Redfern at night, or if you are not game, then ring Redfern police and ask how many asaults on whites have taken place and who are the perpetrators. Keep up the assault and prevent the erosion of our basic freedoms.

Business:

News Limited and Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited are pushing the media review board to make a decision on media ownership in Australia. Later today we will be posting a link to the 19 page News Limited submission... it is frightening stuff showing that the Australian population has just become statistics for manipulation and greed!

Communications Minister, Senator Alston, has been accused in today's Courier Mail (News Limited owned) of "ducking and weaving" on the issue since the March election.

To quote from the paper: "But despite the individual barrow-pushing, the majority of media players agree on two points:

Alston disagrees saying, "The foreign ownership rules are obviously a backdrop against which any other changes in the equation are to be made and clearly we will take account of the foreign ownership regime."

The Courier goes on to say:
"One thing is for certain. If the Government changes cross-media limits without reviewing the foreign ownership regime, billionaire Kerry Packer will be doing cartwheels.

"Mr Packer owns Australia's only truly major locally-owned media group, Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL). It is dwarfed by Rupert Murdoch's the News Corporation Limited but News is classed a foreign company despite being based in Adelaide and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

"PBL owns the Nine television network and Consolidated Press magazine group. It holds 15% of newspaper publisher John Fairfax Holdings Ltd, but cannot increase the holding because of the existing cross-media limit.

"If the Government changes cross-media rules but does not review the foreign ownership regime - which falls under treasurer Peter Costello's jurisdiction - Mr Packer is likely to swoop on Fairfax. That would make it hard to claim ownership diversity was being fostered."

From my perspective this is a red herring and total bull**** as one is as bad as the other and anyone else who tries to weasle in on this act (media ownership) will be ostracised by the sick monopolies within the Australian media.

Sport:

The Australian Rugby League (ARL) lost its appeal against Super League yesterday in the High Court.

This means that two rugby league competitions will run side by side next year.

The longegivity of the ARL appears to be questionable with top teams like Parramatta making it clear that they will review their allegiance at the end of 1997.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Wow what a hot day yesterday... it must have nearly reached 40 degrees celcius with no clouds and this intense heat drilling into your head and body everytime you ventured out into the sun.

Similar, but I hope, a bit cooler day today. We have just erected a large fountain outside the global office... it was great to see the birds enjoying the water...

It was "the day of the birds" with this beautiful "tawny mouth" nocturnal bird parking itself just outside my office window all day and one of my clients offering me a lovely young king parrot which is hurt... but looks like recovering...will keep you informed if that one develops!
