International:

When Rupert Murdoch comes to the "big smoke" it certainly isn't to lie back and enjoy the fine weather we have. Yesterday he issued a blunt criticism of the Howard Government for not implementing decisive changes to revive the Australian economy.

What he was actually saying behind the scenes was that he is not happy about Kerry Packer potentially scoring big out of the government's cross-media inquiry... as he believes that Australia's richest man has considerable influence in the inner circles in the federal ministery.

After saying all that he then said that he has absolutely no interest in buying the Fairfax media empire.

Murdoch told the Courier Mail yesterday that the bold government action required was "to reduce the size of government and get rid of deficits and, more than that, take it right down so that you can lower taxes and help people save money and help small business."

In the accompanying picture the old boy is starting to look his age with grey hair and it looks like he is wearing lipstick.... no, I must be mistaken... he obviously upset someone in the graphic arts section!

A sick attack by a 26 year old man on a 6 year old boy took place in the grounds of a Cairns schoolyard yesterday. The attack by the Adelaide man was believed to be a totally random act.

The boy, a nephew of New South Wales Aboriginal magistrate Pat O'Shane, was doused with petrol from a 5 litre container then set alight in front of teachers and students. The principal, Michael Aitken, was also burned when he attempted to put out the flames.

The attack, which left the boy in a critical condition with severe burns to 60% of his body, was not racially motivated.

Political:

Pauline Hanson is at it again. This time taking a swipe at unemployed sole parents who get 55 hours per week subsidised child care. Once again she has a point that the "lobby-led" major parties cringe to address.

She said that the subsidy had cost Australian tax payers Au$131 million in 1994/95 but that the cost of the subsidies to parents for child care in general had cost Au$745 million during the same period.

Hanson said, "I would like to see this (subsidy to unemployed sole parents) reduced to 12 hours a week".

On the subject of the Independent member for Oxley there are some interesting comparisons appearing in a letter to the editor of the Queensland Times today. The letter (name withheld) compares comments by Hanson to comments by Hitler.

Under the introduction "Here are some of these ideas, spoken by two different people, from two different hemispheres, 70 years apart:"

Ms Hanson (Australian Parliament 1996):
"Between 1984 and 1995 40% of all migrants were of Asian origin. They have their own culture and religion, form ghettos and do not assimilate."
Hitler (1919, paper on "The Danger Jewry constitutes to our people today"):
Amongst us a non-German, alien race lives, not willing, and also not able to sacrifice its racial peculiarities, to deny its own way of feeling, thinking and striving, and which nevertheless possess all the political rights we do ourselves."

Ms Hanson (Australian Parliament 1996):
"I and most Australians want multiculturalism abolished."
Hitler, writing about multicultural Vienna, 1913, (Mein Kampf):
"I was repelled by the conglomeration of races which the capital showed me, repelled by this whole mixture of Czechs, Poles, Hungarians, Ruthenians, Serbs, Croats."

Ms Hanson (Australian Parliament 1996):
"I am going to find out how many treaties we have signed with the UN, have them exposed and then call for their repudiation. The Government should cease all foreign aid immediately, and employ the savings here to generate employment here at home."
Hitler, (Mein Kampf Vol 2 ch 13):
No consideration of foreign policy can proceed from any other criteria than this: Does it benefit our nationality now or in the future, or will it be injurious to it?...partisan, religious, humanitarian and all other criteria in general are irrelevant.

Ms Hanson (Australian Parliament 1996):
"Immigration must be halted in the short term."
Program of Nazi workers party 1920, co-written by Hitler:
"Any further immigration by non-Germans must be prevented."

Ms Hanson, 1996:
"I call for the introduction of National Service, compulsory for twelve months, for young people finishing year 12 or reaching age 18."
Hitler, (Mein Kampf: About young Germans finishing school life):
"Later he must perform the supplementary physical exercises prescribed by the state, and finally enter the army: the training in the army must embrace every individual."

Heavy stuff, but lest we forget.... luckily Pauline Hanson is not Adolf Hitler. She cares about our society, but we need to balance her cares with her comments and what history has or hasn't taught us.

Business:

The freeze on a dubious trade in TNT options has been extended by the Australian Securities Commission. The Federal Court in Sydney yesterday extending the freeze - the Au$2 million trade belongs to an unidentified client of stock broking firm Ord Minnett who uses the alias of "Booth".

Sport:

India has cleaned up the best of Australian batting with their spinners getting on top. The Aussies, playing in Delhi, India, were all out for 182. India are in the hot seat with 57 runs for the loss of only one wicket.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Spent last night working with Barry Corrick working on the World Wide Websters... watch out for the family, because they are coming to a computer screen near to you soon!

Beautiful day once again... what a tough life... signing off from the Global Office - have a good one.
