Political:

Looks like the Federal Ministers are about too lose one of their many and substantial perks. In a surprise move the 24 hour chauffer service exclusive for the use of our MPs is about to be chopped - saving taxpayers about Au$14 million a year.

An average politician spent Au$61,502 on chauffer services alone during the last financial year with the chauffers earning between Au$28,000 and Au$71,000.

Federal politicians get a large range of free and priviledged transport entitlements which include free air and rail travel and free taxi rides.

Over and above this the politicians pay Au$508 a year for a government maintained vehicle for their private use.

Currently there is an even more ludicrous example of "padding one's own pocket" with 13 Ipswich City Councillors earning at least Au$60,000 per annum, put on top of that a motor vehicle for business and private use, computer, mobile phone, very generous travel incentives (such as cash in your pocket - even if you go to Brisbane just 40 kilometres away), superannuation etc... and for the approx 70,000 ratepayers - who foot the bill one of the highest rates in the country.

The Charles Mannington Mystery

A family portrait of young Charles is revealed from the Charles Mannington family archives, although Charlie denies all knowledge.

Business:

The Reserve Bank of Australia is under daily pressure to drop interest rates. This time through a survey by the Australian Business Chamber and Colonial State Bank which showed that manufacturers plan to axe as many as 12,000 jobs nationwide next year because of the high value of the Australian dollar.

In New South Wales alone as many as 3,000 jobs are expected to disappear.

Australian Business Chamber managing director Philip Holt said, "The fact is the manufacturing sector remains depressed - and therefore cannot create the new jobs necessary to overcome the nation's number one problem of employment.

"The Reserve Bank needs to be more mindful of its interest-rate policy - especially given the survey's most positive result on wages in three years.

"Similarly, the Federal Government must think jobs, jobs, jobs in its review of business programmes."

Sport:

Australia dessimated the West Indies in the three match one day series. Not only did they win the three matches straight, but the performance of key players like Brian Lara both on and off the field was far short of perfect.

It was a revitalised Australia that took the last of the one day matches by eight wickets when the Windies were bundled out for just 161 runs.

Mark Waugh and Ricky Ponting did most of the damage scoring 127 between them. Man of the match was Shane Warne with an impressive 5 wickets.

Social:

Australians send more than fourteen million tonnes of waste to landfills across the country each year - which makes it second, per capita, only to the USA.

Of the total waste, construction and demolition industries account for a remarkable 14%.

The amount of waste being dumped far exceeds the government's target of a 50% reduction by the year 2000.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another glorious day ahead - after the rain, one to be enjoyed in the global office.

Had reason to travel to Brisbane yesterday to collect a debt ruled in our favour by the Small Claims Tribunal. The cheques were handed over by Mr Truscott who parted after the hand-over (which was several weeks overdue and had resulted in an arrest warrant being requested) in the style to which I guess he is accustomed with the passing comment, "Mercenary prick".

A case of the pot calling the kettle black me thinks.

We had the old carpet pulled out last week. Andersen Carpets replace it with Peerless Carpet similarly priced but far superior that carries a ten year "no questions asked" warranty. Little lesson to be learnt here by yours truly.
