Today's Headlines
an Aussie's viewpoint on Australia's first daily Internet newspaper.
Friday 8th November 1996
International:
Well Martin Bryant yesterday pleaded guilty to the insane murder of 35 people in Port Arthur earlier this year. The obviously demented man laughed, sniggered and, at time shook uncontrollably when the last of the total of seventy charges were read out. One really wonders what is going through a mind like that when committing such a serious crime is treated as a joke.
Bring back the death penalty... even that's to good for him.
Political:
Our Federal politicians are more than a bit touchy about having their photographs taken by the video cameras in Parliament. Education Minister Senator Amanda Vanstone, who is not blessed with Elle MacPherson looks, is behind the move to have the ability of the cameras to zoom into a politicians face stopped.
Vanstone has had a few bad (visual) moments in front of the prying eyes of the cameras, pictures which have been shown on national television... and she has had enough.
Seems like the dissatisfaction started last year when a photo was taken of then Prime Minister Paul Keating from above and behind revealing his little (secret) bald spot.
Keating was not amused.
You say:
Sorry folks stills on the Gold Coast....
Business:
Australia's largest banks are killing Australia's ability to earn wealth with stealth. The top four banks are expected to earn profits in excess of Au$6 billion this financial year.
Last night we heard how the banks, now getting the reduced interest rate, have delayed passing it on until December - earning millions of dollars at the expense of home owners.
Guess their shareholders must be happy - as reflected in the banking index share price which is going through the roof at the moment.
Another day on the Gold Coast... very nice, but nothing like the beauty of the scene from the Global Office.
However the Gold Coast hinterland comes very, very close....
Have a great day.
