A survey of 128 countries has revealed that, despite claims by politicians to the contrary, Australians carry one of the highest tax burdens in the world.

Combined Federal, State and Local Government indirect and direct taxes and charges take 68.7% of the pay of Australians in the top pay bracket.

An average Australian tax payer on a weekly salary of Au$713 pays about 40% of this in direct and indirect taxes.

Hidden taxes include payroll, sales, land, gambling, franchise and fuel taxes, customs, excise and stamp duties, financial institution duties, bank debit taxes, council rates, car registration insurance and environmental levies.

The major change is reflected in the simple formula that it now takes the average Australian wage payer 146 days in the year to pay his taxes for the year. This compares with only 80 days just 30 years ago.

On some popular items the following tax is now payable in Australia:

Personal trivia, from the global office:

We spent much of yesterday at Wivenhoe Dam, at a CEBS annual parade where the Internet Kid, young Alex, received a Certificate for his involvement with the organisation.

Much of the time was spent wallowing in the waters of Wivenhoe - about the only way to escape the incredible heat - with temperatures once again in the high thirties all day.
