International:

A furure has developed over the extravagent overseas spending habits of the Australian Governor-General, Bill Hayden. Perhaps the comment that captured the moment best was that made by Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop who said: "If it costs that much to maintain the Governor General imagine how much it will cost to support a President if Australia was to become a Republic.

Political:

The Federal Pollies must be having a bit of a siesta at the moment - not much on the go, although State Labor leader and Premier Goss is getting a bit of a serve for hiding behind the skirts of his female MPs!

Business:

News Limited's Pay TV, FOXTEL is to be fomally launched tomorrow. Today's papers are filled with full page colour advertisments promoting the new service.

Sport:

Horse trainer Lee Freedman predicts that his Caulfield Cup winner, Doriemus, could be burdened with a 3kg penalty but still beat international stayer, Double Trigger, in next month's Melbourne Cup event.

Social:

The mystery killer virus that killed a number of horses and their trainer a year ago appears to have returned after a period of latency. A critically ill Mackay, Queensland man has tested positive to the same virus.

Personal trivia:

Well we came, we saw and we conquered at the Queensland Computer Show which ended yesterday. It was great fun and thank you to the many visitors who took time to discuss the business opportunities of the Internet with us. Thanks also to my staff who, like me, were pretty exhausted by close of bus last night.
