International:

The death highway - that 800km strip of road between Sydney and Brisbane which has claimed 600 lives in the last ten years is to be upgraded. Tourists to Australia's East Coast who have travelled up the highway will have experienced the sharp narrow corners plagued with fast moving trucks, coaches and multi-axle vehicles. The upgrade, announced by Prime Minister Paul Keating, will cost Au$2.9 billion and its coincidental timing just before the next Federal election is of passing interest. Why was it not done before is the question thta has got to be asked?

Political:

In the state of Queensland there has never been so many launches of major projects since the Jo for Canberra push in the 1980s. Now one could be accused for claiming that this had something to do with Labor's desperation to retain the seat of Mundingburra. When one looks at where all the projects are being launched that though becomes a distinct probability - yesterday Premier Wayne Goss launched a new Au$120 million coal mining project in the state's north.

Business:

Melbourne based property developer Bruno Grollo is planning an obelisk shaped highrise which will tower 680 metres into the air. The 137 storey structure which will cost Au$1.7 billion to build woud be topped by a 111 metre light pinnacle containing communications equipment and a panorama deck. Now that's one place that you won't find me enjoying the Melbourne view from!

Sport:

Former South African batsman Barry Richards believes that West Indian cricket captain Richie Richardson is the key to saving the Windies from total humiliation in the current one day series being held in this country. Barry Richards says that it is up to Richardson to strike form and inspire the rest of his team..

Social:

The depth of organised corruption within the New South Wales police force through the royal commission has shocked the nation. Senior police down to new recruits have been drawn into drugs, prostitution, protection and bribery with the focus at Kings Cross - Sydney's red light district.

Personal trivia:

Fabulous day yesterday with sunny skies and bird filled skies. One of these days (soon) I promise to post a picture of the view from the global office so that you can share the treasure of this riverside Ipswich environment.
