International:

Prime Minister Paul Keating plays an important role in securing major trade concessions from other APEC members with a 2010 deadline. This could create enormous export opportunities for Australian farmers.

Political:

Quote from Paul Keating "Even Marcel Marceau could steer the dispute to a resolution" - on hearing that the ACTU had selected Bob Hawke (the Labor Leader he toppled in a party coup) to head up their delegation at the CRA dispute before the Industrial Relations Commission .
Dispite all the pressure it appears that Lying (MCPE) Lawrence still refuses to resign as Health Minister. The Liberal Party have now placed the credibility onus on Paul Keating saying that his standards of behaviour must embrace lying to the Parliament.

Business:

Air New Zealand is set to acquire 50% of the Australian aviation company Ansett Airlines.

Sport:

Australia are well on top in the second cricket test against Pakistan. Captain Mark Taylor scored 123 runs taking Australia to over 300 in the second innings. Pakistan needing 370 runs to win were 15 for no wicket at stumps.

Social:

The housing slump in Australia has hit the economy hard and major hardware related businesses are laying off hundreds of workers. The poverty trap of work and no work has now spread through most layers of the Australian culture.

Personal trivia:

Fabulous steady rain last night - we must have had a couple of inches at least. The Brisbane river is flowing strongly this morning although it is a dirty brown colour because of all ythe run-off frrom up stream. Over the weekend I drove up to Mt Glorious due North of Ipswich and visited a friend in an area which is the most amazing living fossil. The 680m high range (only a few kilometres across) was not effected by the ice age and the origins of many of the plants growing there date back to before the last ice age.
