Old Labor Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, is to head up crisis talks between CRA and the ACTU following extraordinary talks called for by the
Industrial Relations Commission yesterday. The ACTU have, in the meantime lifted the blockade of the waterfront. Learnt a very interesting and
sad statistic yesterday. The trade Unions represent 25% of the private workforce yet control 80% of the wage agreements for workers in this sector.
One wonders who is being done by whom.
Political:
John Howard, Liberal Leader, yesterday: "The ACTU action against CRA is all about the trade union bosses keeping their jobs and nothing to do with the
workers keeing theirs." Well said John.
Business:
The individual contracts between CRA and their staff are legal say senior industrial lawyers. As Australia's biggest miner CRA have a great deal at stake
in their dispute with the ACTU.
Sport:
Seems like Channel Nine TV's Kerry Packer and News Limited's Rupert Murdoch have come to a compromise over Superleague. The long and the short of it is
that Packer will now throw his weight behind Superleague as well and all this talk about the threat to tradition and the spirit of the ARL in months gone by by Channel Nine are
now meaningless and without foundation - now that they are both in the same camp. One wonders where that leaves the ARL heirarchy Ken Artherton and his staff?
Social:
The Schoolies went on the rampage last night on the Gold Coast's Surfers Paradise. It's quite remarkable that it happens every year but once again there were
not enough poilce to cope with the situation. Today's quote mentions only 16 police taking on over 300 drunken louts. Severeal arrests were made.
