The Prime Minister will visit Malaysia and Singapore in January to put some finishing touches to repairing the relationship between Canberra and Kuala Lumpur.
Political:
Well now isn't that a surprise. Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating has, after Labor have been in power for over 10
years and just before the Federal election next year, come up with a sure-fire vote winner. Excuse my scepticism but why NOW for 500,000 low-income earners:
Provide more help for people in this bracket renting privately?
Provide $80 million for Better Cities infrastructure projects?
Renew the old public housing?
Review the housing industry regulations?
Could it just be that the permanent unemployed class that have appeared through Labor's policies over the last 10 years are now to be wooed by the politicians who put
them there - in an attempt to get their vote? Surely, the electorate can't be that dumb!
As Liberal opposition leader, John Howard said, this does absolutely nothing for reducing the high interest rates being paid by home owners to the profit-rich banks.
Business:
Queensland Nickel is considering suing its rivals in Cuba and Brazil over their allegedly dishonest access to their top secret documents through bribing one of their
top executives.
Sport:
Australia took the Sri Lankan cricket team to the cleaners after declaring for 5 for 617 they dismissed the Sri Lankan's without having to follow on. In another milestone
Australian spinner Shane Warne took his 200th wicket during the match.
Social:
Australia has the most "gender seperated" workforce in the world according to the head of the Office of the Status of Women (isn't that a great title!).
Personal trivia:
Another hot day yesterday, but we did have nice rain and storms in the evening. In a nearby Brisbane suburb, Beenleigh, the roads were flooded as they were hit by the eye of the storm
with over 2 inches of rain falling in just 30 minutes. Sounds like fun!
