International:

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) blasts UK Prime Minister, John Major, for his support of nucleur testing. We had lots of photo opportunity pics being beamed back to us in Australia featuring a "beaming" Paul Keating standing in posed discussion with other notables.

Political:

Twenty years to the day after the sacking of the Whitlam Labor government the following observation is now made: "Can it be a coincidence that today Kerr (then Governor-General) is still reviled and Fraser (Liberal leader of the time who took over) is redeemed by his charity work, while Whitlam is, and remains, a hero to the nation."

Business:

Chaos as Comalco (part of CRA mining giant) sues 49 of its workers (members of a trade union) who are on strike and disrupting the work of over 600 non-union workers on the Weipa mine site. The ACTU has now threatened to disrupt other mines in the CRA group. Great for our overseas reputation.

Sport:

The Pakistani's have practically thrown the first test against Australia away with abysmal fielding - led by many, many dropped catches. Australia reached 463 all out yesterday with Steve Waugh running out of partners at 112 not out. At stumps Pakistan were 40 for 3 wickets..

Social:

Social Welfare worker, Jennifer Learmont's, natural instincts have put Australian scientists in the running to develop a vaccine for the AIDS virus. She discovered that seven recipients of HIV infected blood never developed fully blown AIDS and are still alive fifteen years later. A faulty AIDS virus missing the killer genes was discovered and is now the centre of all the excitement about an AIDS vaccine.

Personal trivia:

Yesterday the launch of GLOBE International went extremely well and GLOBE New Zealand is expected to be fully operational within the week.
It was a dreadfully hot day yesterday with temperatures here reaching 38 degrees celcius. Look like another hot one today!
