International:

There is never any last chapter. There is no grand final - Prime Minister Paul Keating.

In a major push for innovation the PM said yesterday that all Australians will have access to the Internet and on-line services through community computers under a Au$200 million communications technology package. By the end of the century all schools and tertiary institutions will be linked by the Internet. Even Aborigines living in the remotest parts of Australia will be linked by the National Communications Network established with initial funding of Au$3.5 million. I reckon Keating has just gained (or is it bought) a few computer programmers votes!

Political:

Liberal Opposition leader John Howard said that Paul Keating's innovation statement is full of ideas stolen from coalition policy..

Business:

Business could access up to Au$2 billion through a new pool of money under a Federal Government plan to free up investment restrictions on banks.

Sport:

The Windies (cricket team currently in Australia) are to rest captain Richie Richardson and batsman Phil Simmons for the first match against New South Wales..

Social:

Queensland researchers have made a major breakthrough in controlling polyps which lead to bowel cancer. The combination of low fats and high-fibre foods, such as apples produces highly significant protection against polyps. Bowel cancer occurs in 1 in every 25 Australians and is the most common form of cancer.

Personal trivia:

Well, well, well, we had a creative nation statement and now we have an innovation statement. This country has the potential for really taking the world into the 21st century. One wonders, however, how much of the hundred of millions of dollars will be played into the political football game and how much will go to support true innovation and creative juices. One wonders.
Another warm day yesterday. Closed off with the kids getting their awards at a school function last night as the schools wind down for Christmas.
