International:

Australian multi-national BHP's proposed US$2.5 billion acquisition of Magma Copper Co is being investigated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Political:

Carmen Lawrence will probably escape bankruptcy because of donations by her friends and supporters. The Health Minister was stuck with a Au$240,000+ legal bill after being found guilty of lying to the Marks Commission into Penny Easton's death.

Business:

Controversial Australian pawn broking franchise, Cash Converters, is to go international after recently having a public share float at 56c.

Sport:

Australia's cricket team are in an excellent position to take out the third test against Pakistan. Pakistan were dismissed for 204 runs yesterday leaving Australia a target of just 246. At close of play Australia were 121 for 3 wickets.

Social:

Almost one third of Queensland's childcare centre pl;aces are taken by the children of stay-at-home parents. Child care is becoming a major growth industry in Australia.

Personal trivia:

We had our official house warming yesterday and I had a most welcome and unexpected phone call from family in South Africa. It was a lovely warm day shared with friends and neighbours. It had its moments of embarresment like the 20 minutes I turned the meat over an unlit gas barbecque in front of a hungry male audience!
