International:

The Australian Labor Party are resorting to some more of their undemocratic "tricks" according to One Nation director David Ettridge who yesterday claimed that a former office bearer, Gary Bailey, was a plant.

Bailey's actions following his ejection from a One Nation meeting in Frankston last Wednesday would appear to support Ettridge's claims with his vocal cries to the press belying his former membership of the ALP - where he was an office bearer.

Bailey had been elected secretary-treasurer of the Dandenong branch but the party hierarchy refused to recognise his appointment claiming that he has an ALP infiltrator.

Ettridge said in response that One Nation would refuse to recognise the Dandenong branch while Bailey was still on the executive.

The mainstream media were beating the big wooden drum over another revelation that the former media director for One Nation in Victoria, David Graham, had been subsidised under a federal employment scheme, the Special Employer's Scheme (SES).

25 year old Graham worked for One Nation's Victorian convenor Andrew Carne for a period of 20 weeks under the subsidy scheme. Graham's main duty was administrative work associated with Mr Carne's business but Carne did concede that Graham did "assist me on One Nation business" but that this had been approved by SES program supervisors.

Graham like Bailey took his story to a receptive media looking for a line to hammer One Nation on.

The beat up by the mainstream media on these issues does not detract from the amazing growth and spread of One Nation branches around Australia. When Senator Amanda Vanstone was questioned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation about Graham's role with One Nation her response was quite simple - it is within the SES guidelines - and nothing wrong has been done.

Interesting that the petty squabbling that goes on at the lower levels of the ALP and the Liberal party never surface in the media - in fact not even major tip-offs such as our tongue-in cheek provision of this link to the Courier Mail yesterday.

The journalist who I contacted was so excited, printing out all the files... until he raised the "story" with the papers Chief-of-Staff who told him that it was not newsworthy... yes, you heard me right, not newsworthy... I know this because the journalist told me!

I will keep you informed of this story as it evolves...

The High Court decision on state tax has caused confusion amongst the tobacco, petrol and alcohol industries - those most effected. The decision taken earlier this week has now resulted in the price of beer in Queensland being raised by 15%.

Following the Supreme Court dismissal of the Au$11 million Conolloy-Ryan inquiry into the Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) the state coalition government have established a committee to overhaul the CJC. And yes, you don't have to think too hard as to who will head up the committee - the Attorney General Denver Beanland who set up the Connolly Ryan inquiry in the first place.

The state Labor opposition leader Peter Beattie yesterday called the move a "sick joke" and "extraordinary".

"There will be no blueprint for reform," Beattie said, "rather we are watching the preparation of the battle plan to destroy the CJC. Mr Beanland should not even be a minister let alone completing the inquiry."

Beanland said earlier in the day, "I have not got down to details yet. I will begin next week. However the core powers of the CJC will be retained."

Business:

There is a boardroom crisis going on in BHP this weekend. The board has thrown its support behind managing director John Prescott who yesterday forced the head of the petroleum division, John O'Connor, to resign following his negative comments about the board to a group of institutional investors on Wednesday.

In the last few days the equivalent of Au$2 billion has been wiped off the value of BHP shares.

In welcome news the major Australian banks are losing the housing loan war to discount mortgage lenders like Aussie Home Loans and RAMS.

Public anger at the banks for not passing on the interest rate cuts to home lenders - a move immediately made by non-banking home loan lenders has been pivotal in the drop off in business.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that housing loans made by the banks dropped 8.8% in June to 30,457 while loans by non-banking lenders soared by 42% to 7,202.

Chris Gosselin from Market Faxts (an analyst in this area) said, "The figures suggest there is a large anti-bank feeling influencing customer decisions.

"The banks are very strongly competing on price but are losing market share. I think this will have a lot of people in banks worried."

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another absolutely splendid day in paradise!

Have a good one.
