International:

John Howard claimed endorsement of his domestic reform agenda from business and political leaders in Japan yesterday. He declared that the goals for his first major overseas trip as national leader had been completely achieved.

Howard also revealed that he had urged Japan to include the removal of trade barriers in agriculture in an "action plan" to be presented to a meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders in November.

Political:

It appears that the Federal Opposition will support the Coalition in Parliament and the Senate in their bid to get the Hindmarsh bridge completed.

It was less than a year ago that then Labor Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Robert Tickner (look up name in search archive) prevented the project from proceeding because of a very dubious sounding claim that "women's business" made the area to be effected by the construction of the bridge a sacred Aboriginal site.

Business:

Solomon Lew, vice-chairman of Coles Myer, is taking the company to court in a bid to prevent it from viewing documents released by the Australian Stock Exchange to Coles about the "Yannon affair". This incredible event saw Australia's largest retailing group lose Au$18 million in a share transaction involving Lew who was Chairman of the company at the time.

The transaction had, and still does have, an Alan Bond type smell about it.... and neither the shareholders nor the company directors are happy about it.

The chairman of Coles Myer, Nobby Clark, yesterday confirmed that litigation had started. "With the commencement of proceedings, the company has undertaken not to read the transcripts until October 4 pending a further "unspecified submission made by the company."

Coles Myer planned to argue that its directors should have access to the documents to satisfy internal corporate governance procedures.... all this just before the annual election of directors must make for really interesting meetings of the board.

Sport:

What a match this evening with the Sydey Swans snatching a one point victory after the final siren in their match against Essendon at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The winning point was kicked by Tony Lockett who had had a worse than average game. The final scores were 69-70. Five minutes from the end Essendon led the Swans by 12 points....

The Sydney Swans now meet North Melbourne, as underdogs after North Melbourne simply blew the Brisbane Bears out of the water.

Global Gripe of the day:

The rude Asian visitors in this country...
Working from the global offce I tend to get closeted from the real world. That changed today. With my family including large amounts of baggage we caught the XPT (Express Passenger Transport) train from Sydney to Brisbane. See under Personal Trivia below for more details on our trip.

We waited in a very obvious queue to get on the train in Brisbane and I couldn't believe my eyes when an Asian family, led by their mother, simply moved in and squashed my six year old boy, Alex, who was in front of me, out of the way..... getting on the train before us even though they had only just arrived and we had been waiting ten minutes... but worse was to follow.

We arrived at Sydney and had been waiting 45 minutes in a queue for a taxi with a very tired boy and heaps of baggage late at night. The next taxi arrived and as I and the family started lugging our baggage to the cab this well-dressed Asian woman in her 30s half-ran passed us, jumped into our taxi, and instructed the driver on her destination.... she was not even in the queue, she simply walked through it from off the street... I was shocked and gave "her the finger"..... the cabby who took us to the home of the people that we are staying with said to us, "welcome to the real world Asian's are the ruddest, worst mannered people you are likely to meet.... they do not, or do not want to, understand the reasoning behind a queue and will take advantage of anything or anyone to get in first".

Well next time I will know and if a young Asian woman pushes in again she will be pushed out ten times faster... to hell with the niceties of the traditional Anglo-Saxon.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Fabulous ride by train. It was a fourteen hour trip - we left Brisbane at 7.30am arriving at Sydney at 9.30pm tonight, and except for a couple of disgusting experiences with "the modern Asian traveller" had a wonderful time.

Sydney is cold, colder then Brisbane.... and a whole lot bigger. The global office is the home of a friend of the family. On our return, in about a week's time I will post pictures and the story about our trip, and of course the results of young Alex's web site, Koala trouble, an entry in the Australian Internet Award finals being judged on Tuesday night.

It is now approaching midnight....
