Today's
Headlines
an Aussie's viewpoint on Australia's
first daily Internet newspaper.
Since
October 1995
Final state of the Queensland State elections:
State of the Parliament (89 seats)
ALP | 44 seats |
National | 23 seats |
One Nation | 11 seats |
Liberal | 9 seats |
Independents | 2 seats |
The Labor Party are now trying to form a government with one of the independents.
They are backed by Liberal state premier Jeff Kennett who represents the sick side of town. This slave and voice of the power brokers in Australia has been spooked by the rise and rise of One Nation and has called on Borbidge to allow Beattie to form an interim government.
One thing is for sure "Shreddergate" is about to raise its ugly head and burst the Labor bubble.... at last.
Here is an extract from the press release:
Statement by Pauline Hanson:
At the outset, let me make it clear One Nation is not opposed to foreign investment, nor are we going to print money, but we do oppose excessive foreign ownership, and we do support viable alternative methods to finance our nations development.
Australia has always relied on foreign investment in order to finance the bulk of its business activity.
It is continually reinforced by politicians and big business that foreign ownership of Australian land and Australian industry is necessary and good for Australians.
One Nation disagrees.
One Nation, fear and loathing and the "League of Rights"
Last night Federal Treasurer Peter Costello used an interview on the ABC's 7.30 Report to try to link One Nation with the League of Rights when the One Nation issues of a "people's bank", "printing money" and "low interest loans" were raised. The link being based on the assumption that these were "League of Rights economic policy".
One Nation's national director David Ettridge had raised the issue of "printing money" on a radio programme earlier that day - a comment which was seized on by the likes of Howard and Costello.
Following Ettridge's comments Costello said, "The League of Rights is Australia's premier anti-Semitic organisation.
"...One Nation is being manipulated by forces that it probably does not even understand."
Just two weeks ago Channel 9's 60 Minutes tried, unsuccessfully, to link One Nation to extremist militia groups in the US.
What we are seeing is a contrived scare campaign that is being brokered by the major parties and their media mates.
For One Nation supporters we need to be aware that corrupt, lying politicians from the major parties will take every opportunity to try to envelope the country's population in a scare campaign against Pauline Hanson's One Nation.
When Pauline Hanson was alone in the fight this same corrupt power block tried to vilify and ridicule her. This strategy has failed so now the attack will be targeted at the One Nation support machine and that will include GWB.
In the next article about Murdoch and the Cato Institute you will discover how and why the media concentration in Australia reflects so sickly on journalistic ethics. The centerpiece is "globalisation" which is lauded so loudly by the elites and the intellectual prostitutes who present their master's version of the news to you in News Limited papers.
When Costello raised the alleged link between One Nation and the League of Rights he did so as "fate accompli"... he fiddled with a piece of paper in front of him as the "proof" without allowing those watching the programme to sight it.
It should come as no surprise that League of Rights head Eric Butler said after the interview with Costello, "We are not affiliated with them (One Nation) at all. What I've read of their stuff is pretty garbled."
He went on to say that Costello must be having a "bad dream".... unfortunately no, the Costello remarks are a deliberate move to create sensational anti-One Nation headlines and to create a feeling of fear and loathing amongst a large section of our Australian community.
The divisive comments of Costello are far more damaging for Australia than anything Hanson has ever said and despite the basis of his remark being proved to be without foundation the media continue to trumpet them as fact. David Oldfield called the comments political lies and so they are - but how will the world media reflect Costello's lies?
What Costello did not say is that "News Weekly" a B A Santa Maria publication, lauded by the Federal Liberal party, states in an article headed: "Globalsation the downside:"
"The Federal Government should establish a new "People's Bank", with special sub-divisions for savings and lending to small business and farmers. Low interest credit from the Reserve Bank could be leant to small business and farmers.
"It is not a novel idea. It was an original aim of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia."
Now would B A Santa Maria's group be associated with the League of Rights? Somehow I think not.
And a comment from a regular contributor to anotd
A LICENSE TO PRINT MONEY
The Australian Constitution allows a Federal or State government to have a parliamentary bank . A bank that can lend money, charge any interest it likes, or none at all. Since the One Nation party announced it was going to start a Peoples Bank the misinformation coming from government sources is unbelievable, one of the furphys was that there is X amount of dollars in circulation and that amount cannot be increased without a corresponding rise in production or assets . Every day the banks increase the amount of money circulating in the country by lending money, each time a person obtains a loan or increases their overdraft there is an increase in the amount of money available.
The late Dr. H.C. Coombs, former governor of the Reserve Bank and the Commonwealth bank said when money is lent by a bank it passes into the hands of the person who borrows it without anybody having less. Whenever a bank lends money there is, therefore, an increase in the total amount of money available.
The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in its decisions in the Bank Nationalisation Case said; THE CREATION AND TRANSFER OF CREDIT. VERY LEGALLY CLEARLY, THEN, TRADING BANKS both Commonwealth and PRIVATE, CREATE THEIR OWN FORM OF MONEY OVER AND ABOVE THE LEGAL MONEY PRINTED AND COINED BY THE RESERVE BANK OF AUSTRALIA AND THE COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENT, and lend that bank created or substitute money to approved borrowers.( the preceding was taken from the Chresby Papers by the late Arthur A. Chresby who was a leading authority on banking and the Constitution.)
Another misconception regarding the Reserve Bank. CREDIT ADVANCED BY THE RESERVE BANK VERY DEFINITELY AND LEGALLY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REPAID BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR IT IS STRICTLY A BOOK ENTRY ARRANGEMENT. So why does the Federal government borrow from Private banks and the Loan Market?
Our parliamentarians should get a copy of the Chresby Papers and read them. They would then realise that One Nations idea of a Peoples bank is not so stupid after all.

Final word from David Oldfiled who said, "I wrote that policy and I have never spoken to the League of Rights."
Meanwhile David Ettridge has been given a slap on the wrist by Pauline Hanson and will now stick to administrative issues and leave policy to Mrs Hanson and her political adviser David Oldfield.
In closing it is interesting however that the leader of the Australia First party Graeme Campbell has associations with the League of Rights and that the Queensland State Labor Party put his party ahead of the Coalition in several seats while claiming the high moral ground for putting One Nation last. Dirty politics? You be the judge.
In the 15 years of Act Party members dominating presence in New Zealand politics, the media have inexcusably failed to mention the Act Party's connection to the US Conservative Institutes. Yet there has been no attempt of hide it. 'Prebbles Rebels' homepage gives the Cato Institute as their only international link . The Act Party's homepage single international link is to the US Conservative Foundations.
The Cato institute & other US conservative thinktanks are being funded by the biggest corporations in the US, and no newspaper thinks to mention the Act Party connection or that their policies are from, and being directed by these US conservative thinktanks!!??

Canberra Column by Peter Mackay:
When I first met Mark Lambert two years ago, he was a devoted husband and father of four, a regular church-goer, addicted to computers, the Internet and the SF television show Red Dwarf. Just completed a stint in a high-paying computer job. Lived in a typical suburban home, a solid, respectable middle-class citizen. Nowadays his marriage is on the rocks, he lives in a distant city apart from his wife and family, he has attempted suicide at least once, his career is in ruins, and he is bitter, very bitter.
Wouldn't it be nice to be an ex-Labor Prime Minister!
Meet the new and richer Bob Hawke
Bob Hawke, company director and chairman of boards, is having a big month in business. The millionaire former prime minister has been in South Africa boosting the export ambitions of a Sydney poker-machine manufacturer, while at home his name has been at the forefront of two new Melbourne property deals.
Victoria Heights Apartments, a Hawke-related property company, this week won a planning appeal on a $25 million apartment project in North Melbourne. The Mansion Hotel group, which is developing a luxury hotel at Werribee Park, has taken a long-term lease to manage upmarket serviced apartments to be built on the site of an old Bourke Street department store.
And in Flinders Lane, where Mr Hawke part-owns an art gallery, they have recently received a second consignment of polished African sculptures and there are high hopes of end-of-financial-year sales.
Since he quit Parliament with a $50,000-a-year indexed pension seven years ago, Mr Hawke has turned to the business world to support the mortgage on his four-storey mansion on Sydney's north shore and his new lifestyle with his biographer wife, Blanche d'Alpuget.
Melbourne mining and paper magnates Mr Joe Gutnik and Mr Richard Pratt have paid six-figure sums to retain him as a consultant. National Mutual retained him to help negotiate a licence to operate in China, where Mr Hawke is a regular business visitor.
Just to have his profile and negotiating skills on their boards, it costs companies at least $50,000 a year and the Melbourne businessmen Messrs Spiros and Harry Stamoulis, Mark Robertson, Isaac Lesh, Dan Kolomanski and Albert Mantello have opened their cheque books.
According to Mr Robertson, a property developer and half-owner of the new Mansion Hotel group, Mr Hawke has been well worth his money. "He is very much involved. He is active, informed and a great contributing chairman."
But one thing is becoming clear about the Hawke business acumen. He thinks carefully about investing in these companies any of the reputed $4 million a year he is making from his consultancies and personal appearances.
Mr Isaac Lesh, chief of Siricco House of Leather and partner with Mr Robertson in the Mansion Hotel group, confirmed that Mr Hawke had no financial interest beyond what he was paid to sit on the board.
But Mr Kolomanski, a former consultant to the state's Justice Department, said Mr Hawke had a shareholding in Victoria Heights Apartments, the company that will develop an eight-storey building on the corner of Victoria and Capel Streets, North Melbourne.
Mr Kolomanski and the family of Mr Albert Mantello, a former North Melbourne footballer and director, are the principals behind the project, but Mr Hawke has been chairman during the 18 months it has taken to steer it through its planning and appeal processes.
Mr Hawke's Melbourne business loop is centred around Mr Peter Bartholomew, who acts as his local agent and keeps him company on most of the boards.
Mr Bartholomew, Mr Mark Robertson and his father, Mr Alex Robertson, have a long-standing association in a group of companies that run suburban hotel gaming rooms. Mr Bartholomew acted as negotiator for Vitab, the Vanuatu betting agency owned by his brother-in-law, in a fraudulent business agreement with the Canberra TAB. It became the subject of an ACT Government inquiry that found Mr Hawke and his Tate Family Trust had lent respectability to the deal.
In September 1993 Mr Hawke and Mr Bartholomew formed the trustee company Bundeway Pty Ltd that bought and sold Hothlyn House, the former Qantas building in Collins Street, and another building at 31 Spring Street. The profit from them was about $12 million but Mr Hawke quashed speculation that he had made a killing on the property market. Court action later revealed the families of soft drink manufacturers Messrs Spiros and Harry Stamoulis were the principal beneficiaries of the Bundeway Trust.
Claiming to be "rather bemused", Mr Hawke wrote to The Australian Financial Review last year to correct any misunderstandings: "My role is solely that of a director and shareholder of the trustee of the trust, for which I am appropriately remunerated." One group associated with Mr Hawke is headquartered in the Sargood Building in Flinders Lane. The basement is being fitted out as a restaurant to be run by the wine auctioner Mr Stewart Langton, who is a co-director on the Mansion Hotel board, and French master chef Mr Philippe Mouchel.
The upper floors are being converted by the Robertson-Lesh partnership into 25-square "New York-style" apartments, selling for between $520,000 and $750,000 to $1 million-plus for a penthouse.
The ground floor is divided in two. On one side is the office of the Robertson family's property development and leisure industry group of companies, including the headquarters of The Mansion Hotel Pty Ltd. The other side is the Chapungu Shona Gallery owned by Mr Hawke, Mr Lesh, Mr Robertson, Mr Euan Gronow and Mr Roy Guthrie.
This is one of the few ventures in which Mr Hawke has risked his own capital. Mr Guthrie, a South African who lived in Zimbabwe for 50 years, introduced Mr Hawke, Ms d'Alpuget and the others to the works of contemporary Zimbabwean sculptors.
The group has spent a reputed $1 million to introduce an obscure branch of modern African art not previously known to Australia.
Simplistic side of John Howard exposed.
John Howard goes to Washington for a meeting with Bill Clinton.
After dinner, Bill says to John: "Well John, I don't know what you think of the members of your Cabinet, but mine are all bright and brilliant".
"How do you know?" asks John
"Oh well, it's simple", says Bill. "They all have to take special tests before they can be a minister. Wait a second". He calls Madeleine Albright over and says to her "Tell me Madeleine, who is the child of your father and of your mother who is not your brother and is not your sister?"
"Ah, that's simple Mr. President", says Madeleine, "it is me!"
"Well done, Madeleine", says Clinton and John Howard is very impressed.
John Howard returns to Canberra and wonders about the intelligence of the members of his Cabinet. He calls in Tim Fisher and says:
"Tim, tell me, who is the child of your father and of your mother who is not your brother and is not your sister?"
Tim thinks and thinks and doesn't know the answer.
"Can I think about it a bit further John? May I let you know tomorrow?"
"Of course", says Howard, "you've got 24 hours".
Tim Fisher goes away, thinks as hard as he can, calls in his team but no-one knows the answer. 20 hours later, Tim is very worried - still no answer and only 4 hours to go.
Eventually Tim Fisher says "I'll ask Peter Costello, he's clever, he'll know the answer." He calls Costello.
"Peter", he says, "tell me who is the child of your father and of your mother who is not your brother and is not your sister?"
"Very simple", says Peter, "it's me!"
"Of course" says Tim and rings John Howard.
"John", says Tim, "I've got the answer: it's Peter Costello".
"No, you idiot", says Howard, "It's Madeleine Albright".
Subject: Treasurer just insulted everyone
Scott,
Been a while since I actually wrote anything here. Could you edit this message and only send the relevant parts to 'News of the Day' Since most is directed at you.
Did you see the 7.30 report interview with the Treasurer, right near the end he was asked about the 2% loan scheme and why it couldn't be done since we send so much aid to Korea and Indonesia, he stated that we have not sent Aid to Indonesia or Korea (a complete lie since we provide military aid to Indonesia, as well as intelligence reports for the region) but what he said if my ears didn't deceive me was this.
Even if we do give money loans to other counties it will only be in Australia's Interests and that is why we won't provide loans to Australians at reduced rates.
Does he mean that Australian receiving money is not in Australia's best interests or that providing a boost to the economy through money relocation and movement isn't in our national interest. I think the treasurer better wise up on who he supports Us or other parts of the world, also he has missed the one facet of economy that 99.9% of economists miss and that is that Money is not backed by anything (including gold) other than TRUST, and that is trust by the people using it.
As the old saying goes "Money is no good except for what you spend it on", if you spend it, you buy things that have to be maid by people who get paid to make them so that they can live and buy things that have to be made, ad infinitum.

Subject: Printing money
Why all the fuss about printing money? Is it because it might be another simple answer that will work?
The people who have ran this country for more than 25 years have one thing in common. Each successive government has put Australia further and further in debt. They have ALL proved to be "brain-dead" when handling Australia's finances but I wonder how many of these ex-leaders are now broke and looking for a job.
The idea of just printing more money is not new. It has been done before with success and saved Portugal's falling economy.
I suggest that former Treasurer's and present Prime Ministers read the following book: Gifford,Thomas:THE MAN FROM LISBON-McGraw-Hill Book Company,NY,1977.
Who knows, they might find out where they've been going wrong all these years?

Subject: Banks
On John Laws Radio show Thursday 18 Ray Bradley described himself as a boof-headed football commentator, very true because he certainly is lacking in his knowledge of THE BANKS. Most Australian banks are foreign controlled in other words the majority shareholding is foreign namely Chase Manhatten. That Australian banking icon WESPAC is at least 50% foreign owned , I have no figures on the rest except to say that the Rothschilds and the Rockefellers would have a bit of a say at any board meeting.
Since it was announced that One Nation was going to set up a People's Bank in Queensland the brick bats have come thick and fast. IT will create inflation. it will cost jobs ( a good old standby that one) IT can't be done and so on. Well, for all those experts including Dishonest John I would ask them to read The History of The Commonwealth Bank and I hope Mr. Ettridge didn't say what he is reported as saying about making money.

Subject: Re: Sea Change
The major parties, and the media, have gone into overdrive in their unswerving pursuit of the destruction of Pauline and One Nation. They are signalling that they plan to add a new angle of attack by concentrating on creating a perception of One Nation as 'The stupid and idiotic policies party.'
Howard and Costello began yesterday, variously describing One Nation as having economic policies that would be dangerous and damaging for Australia, scare out foreign investment, and destroy Australian jobs. In today's Courier Mail, Terry Sweetmann refers to One Nation supporters as being average, decent folk (but, by implication, also dumb and misguided) who 'somehow see a future in One Nation's vague and simplistic excuses for policy,' as well as referring to its 'substantial core of seriously paranoid and dangerously deranged followers' who believe in plots to disarm Australia; that Martin Bryant was somehow set up, and that there is some kind of international conspiracy dominated by the banks and the United Nations. Piers Akerman (Daily Telegraph) refers to Hanson's warped ideas, flimsy party and totally unworkable solutions, and that 'a vote for those elected in her perfumed wake is a vote for absolute uncertainty.'
Blind Freddy can see this new approach is in response to the criticism of the past few days that the media's concentration on Hanson the brainless racist, as opposed to her brainless policies, contributed to the success of One Nation in Queensland. This new attack has the potential to be far more damaging. One Nation spokespersons need to be perceived by the electorate as continuing Pauline's common sense approach, whilst being extremely careful not to make ANY statements that can easily be portrayed as 'deranged.' The electorate rejected the deranged tag for Pauline - but she was speaking about social, NOT economic, issues, and it might not be so easy to shake off the deranged tag when it is applied to economic policies.
As well, it matters little how many solid references there are in the literature that Central Banks can, and do, issue currency, because this will never get an airing and will just be distorted, and added to the conspiracy theorists tag, to assist in creating a loopy, looney right, extremists image. My next door neighbour, who previously told me she admires Pauline and is seriously thinking about voting for her, asked me (at the bins this morning) if there really was an easy answer like just printing more money, why wasn't everyone doing it! I had to admit I had no idea.
I am surrounded by economic rationalists where I work, and, after days of looking somewhat shell shocked, they were practically rolling on the floor with laughter and relief this morning, enthusiastically recalling how the 'lets just print some more money' syndrome had contributed to the eventual downfall of Whitlam, and how this, plus the shady loans deal, had been primarily responsible for his government being perceived as 'economically irresponsible.' I can certainly recall cartoonists back then, lampooning Cairns and Whitlam as anxiously hovering over printing presses that weren't churning out the 'funny money' quite fast enough for them!!
I asked our esteemed economic rationalists what the difference was with the current situation of throwing of billions of our tax dollars at multicultural and indigenous policies that had, so far, achieved absolutely nothing, except division and discord; and, instead, delivering welfare to all Australians based on need, whilst using the balance to subsidise some of the relatively productive members of the Australian community, like farmers (National Party voters!) or even miners and industry (Liberal big business voters and ALP workers voters!) They conceded redistribution of subsidies in such a way would be more effective, both economically and socially, providing they were transparent and Australians were fully aware they were subsidising these activities. And that, yes, allocating a finite sum of taxpayers dollars to a Rural Bank, instead, to loan to farmers at 2%, on the clear understanding it was not welfare, but a subsidy that would have to be repaid, was not such a bad idea. BUT, they pointed out that was NOT what One Nation was saying!
Unless, One Nation is going to put an economist on the payroll, and defer to him on these matters, it is important to stick to common sense statements that people can easily understand, preferably linked to what is currently perceived to be a gigantic waste of tax revenue on ethnic and indigenous special interest groups as well too many pollies all getting outrageously generous super and other perks and junkets, not to mention rorting the system!
Scott, I want to say something on preferences as well as follow up on yesterday's 'ministerial' post, but this is already long, so I'll put it into another email.
Cheers
Carol
Subject: Peter Clod-ello: Mr ad hominem!
This character appeared on last night's '7:30 Report' and was interviewed about various matters: including the 'slide' of the Oz dollar.
However, he _simply could not resist_ taking a "swipe" at ON Party. The words smarmy, slimy and shifty come irresistibly to mind. Mr Clod-ello raised that old bugbear,"the League of Rights", quite neglecting to add that this organisation is _not_ a political party, and that various politicians(including ex-PM Malcolm Fraser) actually sought their advice. The intent was clear: to 'smear' ON Party by association with the 'anti-semitic' tag. Next: that good old runner-up: conspiracy theorists and the New World Order. Obviously, ON Party are complete loony tunes to entertain such ideas even for even a _nano-second_. Conveniently(except for a brief passing mention of the 'Lima Treaty'), Clod-ello failed to advance _any evidence whatsoever_ to show why belief in the New World Order and the consequent erosion of Australia's sovereignty should have any basis in fact. Nor did he endeavour to refute _any_ of the substantial arguments that ON Party has advanced on these issues and/or the extensive documentation and evidence that has been posted on 'Web Pages' like this one!
Still, when you're on a good ad hominem, stick to it.
All seemed to be running smoothly until the interviewer put a couple of points to our erstwhile Treasurer concerning 'low interest loans' and 'excessive Australian loans to help bail out Asian economies'. The questions were more in the nature of superficial, off-the-cuff remarks. Nevertheless, old Clod-ello was stunned(perhaps they hadn't been part of the pre-agreed script: or perhaps certain ABC journos are starting to think a bit clearer these days). Whatever....if you ever want a definition of 'dazed and confused', a "freeze-frame" of old Clod-ello there would have done the trick. I couldn't help laughing. This klutz was actually 'slack-jawed'! His solution: start asking the interviewer for answers!?
Amazing! Astounding! Incredible! Fortunately for him, the subject was quickly changed.
Ho-hum, another victory for common sense, logic and the ON Party! Methinks their approval rating just increased 5%! One wonders when(and if) the likes of Mr Clod-ello will emerge from behind the protective screen of their media-mates and engage the likes of Mr David Oldfield in full and fair public debate....for the moment, however, I am not holding my breath!
cheers!

Subject: McDonalds???
Dear Sir
I'm sure the many Australians who have put their own Australian money into buying McDonalds franchises would be amazed to hear that it's overseas owned or overseas investment! I also suspect that the number of owners and employees of the many, many Australian small cafe/snack businesses that McDonalds has sent to the wall would probably equal the jobs that McDonalds generates. So much for the benefits of foreign ownership!
So Howard thinks One Nation's policies are experiments ... We have put up with experimentation by Labour and Liberal Governments for 30 years - one-third of Australians over 40 have had their savings and assets stripped from them by interest rate manipulation and greedy banks, with the encouragement of the Labour government. Property prices are outrageous, and I agree with your David. Money is only a token. It isn't some limited commodity that an all-powerful being has created just a limited amount. However, Howard's may be right to be fearful. Once this country was so wealthy that we could have covered an increase in circulated currency; now, with 80% of our supermarket items foreign owned, and profits being taken out of the country, and more on the agenda, who knows? And do we have a foreign land ownership register?
Keep up the good work!

Subject: Re: Preferences and Ambition
Scott,
I was interested to read Neil Wiseman's article in today's Courier Mail, under the heading, 'One Nation troops carry ambition in their knapsacks.' Wiseman comes across as exceedingly miffed that, as he puts it, 'chief puppeteer, David Oldfield' has been 'hosing down her (Pauline's) troops' ministerial ambitions,' and that after Oldfield had just finished telling ABC listeners 'what you actually have now is diverse views and people who are willing to stand up and talk without fear of the party organisation,' Jeff Knuth, 'who is to become the Honorable Member for Burdekin and had said he would like to be premier on Tuesday,' now had to get Oldfield's permission to even talk!
Thank the Lord for David Oldfield's political nouse, and common sense, and, oh boy, is Wiseman ticked off! He gets the boot in anyway with statements like 'What the ON brigade lacks in political sophistication, it makes up for in ambition.' and 'Before Oldfield spoilt their fun with an injection of reality, other One Nationers had the whiff of ministerial leather in their excitedly flaring nostrils.'
Paddy McGuinnes also refers to this issue in today's SMH, albeit in a slightly more objective manner. He points out that even The National Party has suffered by being the junior partner in the Coalition, because that has meant 'they ceased to be able to act and speak as irresponsibly as its supporters wished....There will be attempts to seduce the Hansonites into government. This would be a fatal mistake for them. While they are nothing but a protest movement, they will exercise considerable influence......as Richard Prebble pointed out, in New Zealand on Tuesday, the great mistake of the New Zealand First Party was to enter the Bolger Government to gratify the ambitions of its leader, Winston Peters. That was the kiss of death for NZ First's influence and its popular support has declined catastrophically......If the major parties are genuinely worried about the soft fascism of Hansonite populism, the only way to counter the popular revolt is to deal with it by alliance, electorally and practically.......A simple swap of second preferences between Labor and Liberals would eliminate the One Nation Party.'
Which brings me to the preferences issue. I realise the party's finances are limited, but, if there is to be any paid advertising in the forthcoming Federal campaign, I would dearly love to see it focus mainly on this one critical issue of preferences.
Something along the lines of pointing our the absolute arrogance of the major parties attitude of a God-given right to allocate *our* preferences on the assumption that voters just mindlessly follow their 'How to Vote' cards. In other words, yet another manifestation of the very same 'we know what is best for you' attitude that has already disenfranchised so many. Linked to the claim that One Nation is the only political party to ever produce 'How to Vote' cards that said 'Place your Number 1 vote in the (One Nation) box and fill in the other squares if/as you wish' This would be a powerful message that only One Nation respects the intelligence of the people enough to allow them to make their own decisions, and exercise their own options, and does not think of them as sheep who will automatically fulfil the preferential expectations of a political party. This alone is a strong reinforcement of the perception that Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party is not self serving but really wants to do something to turn things around. Along with this 'It's Wake Up Time' might be a good slogan.
Cheers
Carol
Subject: One Nation - last on "how to vote cards"
I strongly object to placing Pauline Hanson "last" on the Liberals "how to vote cards". The recent Queensland election proved beyond any reasonable doubt that a significant percentage of Australians believe that Pauline can dramatically improve Australia.
We, the people, are getting a little tired of elected politicians telling us what is good for us - according to them. Our MP's must remember that they are servant's of the people and must implement the direct wishes of the people, not implement the demands of the corrupt international financiers to the detriment of Australian citizens
We do not need a GST, nor do we need to compete in the international market - this is national suicide. Pauline Hanson's view are correct, we must establish our own financial system and re-establish our national manufacturing industry as was original.
Pauline Hanson represents the citizens of Australia, whereas your administration only implements the demands of the international financiers.
Rodney

Dear One Nation,
Congratulations on your election into the Queensland government. Keep up the good work. I was at your Werribee, Victoria meeting and it is good to see how you have grown.

Subject: Congratulations
I had no interest in One Nation until a gradual realisation that almost every political party and media organisation had systematically and maliciously twisted and distorted the true meaning and policies of them with vilification and outright lies that in the process was treating any and every Australian as a complete and gullible idiot.
I believe that as more and more people become aware that they have been treated in this manner, that they will also start to think as I do, and will turn on the major parties with a vengeance. You are going up a long long way throughout this country yet.
It is unfortunate that throughout history, genuine people like Pauline become caught up with the powerful and end up either martyrs or just another part of that corrupt system.
What are One Nations policies on the Family Unit, to the terrible injustices to loving fathers that the Family Court inflict upon them and encourage the destruction of the family unit by the rewards to mothers of most assets from a split and then to sponge of the system until those children reach 16. Is joint custody a policy of yours? Do you believe in abolishing the adversarial system that uses children as pawns in the F.C. industry?
Best wishes - Phil Morton

Subject: Ray Martin interviews
As we all know, the media is giving all One Nation members a hard time. Ray Martin talks over Pauline and gives her virtually no chance to answer a question before he fires another question at her. He tries to intimidate her as he does with anyone whose views he does not agree with. Perhaps a little of his tactics may be beneficial when being interviewed by him. Why not intimidate him? Maybe not many people remember an incident that could and should be very embarrassing to him. You may remember Ray being in London at the time Lady Di was killed. He was there at the time of the funeral. He had such a sad voice and face endeavouring to convey utter sadness at the shock of Lady Di's demise. Well, maybe when he is being so smart to Pauline on Channel Nine and trying to intimidate her or any other representative of One Nation for that matter, the fact should be thrown in that some years ago (the early eighties) he was being interviewed (I think maybe when he left Sixty Minutes) about his time as a reporter and the methods he employed to interview elusive celebrities. Laughingly, he explained how he along with his crew had, outside the London flat of Diana Spencer (prior to her marriage to Price Charles) deflated all the tyres on her car so that she could not 'escape' their attention and questions. He thought that was extremely funny. Should one care to do so or have the ability to do so, one could hunt up that tape and see his stupid grin explaining just how 'clever' he was. Perhaps, that incident could be thrown in as an analogy when he tries his smart alec tactics with Pauline. The look on his face would be worth it. I rang Radio Station 2UE some time ago about the matter and spoke to that idiot Ray Hadley. When I explained the matter to him and voiced my concern re Martin's hypocrisy, he cut me off saying 'Ray Martin is a friend of mine and wouldn't let anyone's tyres down'. Let's give him some of his own medicine. Please consider it Pauline, because the best method of defence is 'attack' and it's time you showed them you have 'teeth'. Hit them where it hurts.

Subject: Re: Protest
your opening line " As an Australian born Chinese" sums up in a nutshell , the "Asian" argument. Seventy years on and you cant throw off the reference, maybe now you might see the reason for the uproar. Other Australians foresee trouble coming through this attitude and want to nip it in the bud before we have all the irreversible strife of other countries.
I do not refer to myself as an Australian born Dane, just an Australian. What makes you different? Isn't being identified as "An Australian" good enough. I don't care where your grandparents come from, and neither should you.
Is it so offensive that you must fight against being just an "Aussie"?? Why do ethnic groups fight so hard and long to resist being one nation?? Are we not to be concerned.? Australia has its own unique culture, one that has always held mateship, unity in adversity, give others "a fair go" mentality and generally avoided the worst of all the old world hatred and subculture being introduced here. Multiculturism threatens that principle. The signs are everywhere, ethnic organisations, ethnic based crime, ethnic community leaders, foreign flag flying at inter club sporting events, pressure to ban xmas carols at kindergartens, inter race disputes over old foreign animosities and many other irritants that should have no place in this country and threaten its cohesion.
.We will fight to the end to prevent this country becoming just another squabbling conglomeration of tribes. You should be at the forefront , not in opposition.
What will destroy the "easy going" manner of Australians is the hyphenated terms such as your own description which we see increasing daily. Why do such things as ethnic communities exist but to perpetuate racial separatism to the detriment of this country? I think you and a lot of others should look deep inside and see it though other Australians eyes, for what it is. Racial separatism with a large dose of Racial superiority complex mixed in.
I see a lot of non anglo names on this site, and they are very proud to be Australia, without the hangups of identifying with another country. ON supporters dream of a united country, not a cluster of tribes all pushing their own barrow.. How can this country not self destruct when its citizens are encouraged to have allegiances to 140 different foreign lands?? The labor party should hang their collective heads in shame for this atrocious experiment they have foisted upon the nation. Australia has the unique opportunity to become something unlike all other countries, baggage free, it will not be given up lightly.
.Your threats of boycott only exemplify the very worst of the nastiness of race intolerance, it is you who are doing exactly what you complain loudest about and what we are against.. Spiteful Discrimination and racial , not national self interest.!!! Your smug referenced threats to China buying elsewhere reeks of loyalty to a foreign land and not your place of birth, the fact that you gloat about it is very saddening. Maybe its best if you don't come to Qld, try any other Asian country and tell me how you get on. we don't need the crap.
Im Australian and proud of it!!!

Subject: Roll-on effects
It is tempting to say to people here in Victoria that maybe Queenslanders are a little slow to catch on since ONLY 23% of them voted for PHON.... when the 60-Minutes site and Herald-Sun polls indicate that around 80% of "Mexicans" show preference for PHON! :>) However, herein lies a prejudice towards banana-benders -- by having been born alongside the Barcoo, which rather makes me "true blue". Nevertheless, Queenslanders have led the way, and the consequences are filtering south.
Two items in today's Herald-Sun (Melbourne) are worthy of note with a moral from each one.
1. Under the heading "Footy legend down and out" it describes Polly Farmer's unfortunate business demise. In previous reports, the Asian meltdown was blamed along with tourism. For this report, however, there is enough detail to suggest that the reporter, Mark Russell, actually took the trouble to speak to Polly himself. Almost buried in subsequent columns a new facet comes to light via: "Farmer has blamed the Asian economic crisis for a downturn in business, which meant he could not pay the $10,000 monthly rent to the motel's Asian owners."
Several paragraphs later he is quoted "I'm only one of probably thousands of Australians that this has happened to, you know, and people can feel sorry for me..."
Would someone like to explain how this represents good foreign investment in Australia? Presumably Polly has to dismiss his staff? So, does foreign investment give employment in the LONG TERM? As Graham Strachan has pointed out, multinational takeovers often mean retrenchment under the guise of Economic Rationalism. Regarding the latter, Borbidge seems to have seen the light, and that same TV segment where he said it actually tracked down the egghead responsible and admitted that he was a consultant for the major parties.
Moral: It pays to read the whole article and not just the headings and/or first few lines. Journalists are still apparently taught the old "Man bites dog" line for headlines. Also we ought to try to assess if the reporter made personal contact. In Media Watch (ABC), examples have been given of media reports from meeting fliers when the meeting itself was actually cancelled!!
2. Andrew Bolt has had an amazing about-turn. In the past he has ruthlessly attacked and denigrated Pauline Hanson. In today's issue, he actually attacks the militant black activists like Charles Perkins for pushing moderate aborigines and whites towards the PHON 'equality' view of things. Bolt says in answer to the push by the militants for separatism: "Rubbish. In fact, one third of married Aborigines have a non-Aboriginal partner according to census data. They know in their hearts we can get along." Moral: It is now becoming even more acceptable to tell and explain PHON policies to friends and acquaintances at a private level. That is, just keep plugging away.
Maybe, just maybe, this was what happened when Bolt interviewed Pauline a short time ago. She could have gotten through to him in her usual pleasant manner when she is able to talk one-to-one.

Barry.

Read a few of your pages & all I can say is here here.
I've been well aware for some years now about the money & power barons & their manipulation of the media. And the fact that most of them will stop at nothing to further their ends.
I sent a message for David Oldfield regarding today's comments about the 'printing money' statement.
Howard et al. must be pretty dumb if they don't realise that the banks print money right now, or just being mouthpiece for those who're pulling their strings.
There's a lot more to the banking industry that most people know, & the statement below by Henry Ford speaks for itself. Let's get the message out to the people that they're being screwed from all directions.
I've downloaded Pauline's speech about the indigenous thing, & some of the stuff from ATSIC, & will spread them around.
Keep up the good work.
Subject: News service
This is more or less in reply to a message from Alan Esson published on Thursday, June 18.
The idea of a "One Nation newspaper" has its merit, but would be diminished by the obvious implied bias and would lose credibility in the long run. From talking to many One Nation supporters over the last year or so, I believe they only want a fair go and don't mind criticism as long as the process is fair.
One Nation should urgently work on media policies. The first step to any significant changes to the existing Mafia system would be a Royal Commission into the media, with wide powers to investigate the relationship between business, politicians and media. There are many former editors out there who are dying to tell their stories under legal protection.
The media always hides behind the "right to know" and "the public interest", as well as "the freedom of the press". A long time ago, a journalist suggested that the freedom of the press was no more than the freedom for the proprietor to promote his prejudices without offending the advertisers. The public interest is always conveniently confused with what the public is interested in. The right to know should be the right for all of us to know how money can buy a democracy.

Excellent Idea,
1) One Nation News incorporates as an independent non-profit organisation. It would be part of the (future) National Trust and any profits are reinvested in infrastructure or reinvested in the national interest. It would be subject to review and scrutiny and uphold journalistic ethics.
2) If 23+% of QLD can vote for One Nation, then issue press releases, email, flyers, radio publicity - whatever it takes to ask the people that support One Nation to contribute $10 (or whatever they can afford) to an equipment fund. If 20,000 people gave $10 it would be enough for a small press, then charge 70 cents (extra 10 cents for Interstate freight).
3) Offer free classifieds for private sales, Small business and corporate ads at very competitive rates - always a good incentive for distribution.(first come first served as volume limits apply) These are just a few ideas off the top of my head, obviously I don't have all the answers and some may not be the right ideas but my $10 is ready when you are.

The Librarian,
PARLIAMENT HOUSE
Dear Friend,
CREATING CREDIT FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
Is there a particular reference in the Library to the creation of significant credit, by the Governor of the first form of the Commonwealth (People's) Bank, to meet the needs of either funding a War effort or building links, across the Nullabor, between eastern and western sides of the nation?
There appears to be a current need to rediscover how this was achieved and also how, over time most of the funds that had been created were progressively withdrawn from circulation to avoid the adverse effects that would have flowed from a substantial devaluation of the currency.
Eventually the so called "major" political parties non-parliamentary party machine hierarchies which control the governments will be under immense pressure to rebel against the financial dictates of their foreign masters simply to rescue the country from internal strife by at least pretending that this nation is an independent sovereign "state" capable of actually acting in the genuine interests of its citizens.
Many are convinced that the childish types, who currently warm the parliamentary seats, are just not up to the task of governing properly let alone managing the nation's finances and that the extent of disenchantment with them is increasing, rather than decreasing, every time their spokespeople fail to give due consideration to the proposals of "lesser mortals". Nearly all important achievements throughout history have been due to the insistence of 'unreasonable' people (reasonable ones can apparently be talked out of it or persuaded that what is proposed is "impossible" and far too costly).
Sincere thanks in anticipation of your assistance in our search for the facts.
Sincerely.

Dear sir,
I live in Canada, in Oakville, Ontario and am delighted with the results of the Queensland elections in which I understand you garnered eleven (11) seats. I correspond with a namesake in Brisbane and he advised me of the dirty tricks the media have been playing on you, which only goes to prove that the opposition are running scared. I am sure in the federal election One Nation will do very well and hopefully become the opposition if not the governing body. Keep up the good work.

Dear One Nation,
Congratulations on your election into the Queensland government. Keep up the good work. I was at your Werribee, Victoria meeting and it is good to see how you have grown.

Subject: Taiwanese investors
Taiwanese investors withholding Qld investment? I doubt it very much!
Have so many people already forgotten that Taiwan was one of the only countries in the world to recognise and trade with South Africa throughout the Apartheid era?
(South Africa in turn was one of the only countries to recognise the Taiwanese government, all the other countries to too busy sucking up to the Chinese Communists, hoping for market access)
And now the Taiwanese believe what they read in the newspapers, and try to project some sort of superior moral attitude!
Get real!
Subject: Anti-semetic policies?
What is all this propaganda about One Nation being anti-semetic? Can anybody mention one time when Jews have even been mentioned in a One Nation policy, let alone adversely affected by one?
What are their motives for attacking One Nation? What are they scared of?
Have they done something that they should be ashamed of, that could be discovered by an uncorrupted political party?
It's time to answer these baseless allegations about anti-semitism. Name one example! Anybody?

Subject: How to vote
Could you please read this and tell me if it is
factual.
MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT
Voting for one of the major parties means more sell-offs of public assets, more cut-backs in essential programs, more job losses and more benefits to the wealthy and privileged at the expense of the rest of us. Not that we have any illusions about the system itself, where the most important decisions are made outside Parliament, but as you still have to cast a vote, you might as well use it as effective as you can.
The way things are, voting for a minor party and giving your preferences to one of the major parties, no matter how far down the list, is the same as giving them a direct vote. But there is another option.
As stated in the Scrutineer+s Handbook, both State and Federal, you can cast a valid vote in the following way:
If you have a progressive candidate standing and don+t want a bar of the Labor / Liberals, you can choose how far your preferences flow. For example:- You can put a -1- in the box of the candidate of your choice and then -2- in all the other boxes. If you want to support two people, you vote -1- and then -2- and the number -3- in all other boxes. You must put the last number in every other box.
You may wonder why this form of voting has not been widely publicised. The main reason is that any form of optional preferential voting is destructive to the major parties because preferences do not automatically flow to them. At the moment, the major parties rely on preference votes to keep the minor parties and independents out. These compulsory preferences give legitimacy to the no-choice two-party charade. This is backed to the hilt by the media, owned and controlled by powerful people with a vested interest in maintaining a system which allows them to dominate political decision-making.
Voting the way we recommend allows you to vote for the person or party of your choice and ensures that other candidates or parties do not get the flow-on preference votes. This defeats the -nowhere else to go- arrogance of party leaders.
Voting this way is valid. But advertising this method is illegal once writs have been issued (this means that information leaflets such as this cannot be distributed once the actual date of an upcoming election has been announced by the government.) The Electoral Commissioners have done everything they can to deter people from publicising this option, even court action--- see article on Albert Langer, Daily Telegraph, Saturday, February 17 1996, page 21.
Thank you,
Marc Bennier
P.S. Great election results in QLD.
