We spoke to a member of the staff at Global Info-Links (GIL) at about 3.30pm who, on checking, was able to confirm where the break-in originiated. We were able from the hacker's identification being recorded at GIL to track the source down to the University of Melbourne ITS Services.
I sent the following email to the web master and followed it up with a phone called directly to the web master:
Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 16:22:08 +1000
Subject: Hacking from one of your computers.
Dear Sir,
The user at:
We wish to proceed with charges against the individual of the university
or the University of Melbourne itself for allowing hacking...
Kindly advise who the individual is so that we can formally proceed with
this matter.
nigelf@gil.com.au at Global Info-Links has the technical proof relating
to this access.

The web master at the university said that the originator could be doubtful because of "IP spoofing". I put him in direct contact with the technical support person at GIL who was monitoring the ongoing hacking.
At about this time I started receiving dozens of email like the one below:
Return-Path: antinazi@antinazi.com
Subject: WARNING
DO NOT MAIL ME AGAIN
Your eMail URL will be published at several Antinazi-Pages and sites of democratic parties
At about 5.25 pm we had a call from the director of IT at the University of Melbourne, Mr Norbitt Reidel, who confirmed that they had identified the staff member and that disciplinary action would be taken against the individual.
We are now considering our options with regards to this direct assault on the web site of a registered political party by a staff member using a University computer to launch the attack.
Queensland State Premier Rob Borbidge has got sick and tired of waiting for the Prime Minister to resolve the native title issue and has now sought legal advice from an eminent British law professor, John Finnis at Oxford University, to assess whether this state could "go it alone".
Borbidge said that the native title claim over the entire Gold Coast was "effectively a declaration of war" against the community.
"All it will do is create anger and division in the community," Borbidge said.
National Senator Bill O'Chee said that it could lead to visitors having to pay a toll to go and visit the areas famous sandy beaches.
"If this claim is successful, then there would be no right to go to the beach unless you paid a toll, just as you might have to pay a toll to go fishing," he said.
The claimants, the Kombumerri people, stressed that they did not want ownership of private land, just a role in the conservation of vacant Crown land.
Borbidge, who's electorate is the Gold Coast, said, "We're now getting (native title) claims over the air, we're getting claims over the waterways, we're getting claims over the beaches."
What is not commonly known is that a non-indigenous person travelling by road through a large isolated area "owned" through native title by an Aboriginal group is not legally allowed to stop his or her vehicle - even if nature calls - unless he or she has first sought and gained permission from the land owners.
One of Pauline Hanson's "The Truth" four co-authors, George Merritt, spoke out yesterday about the book.
He said that two of the authors were well respected academics but, "they are afraid they will lose their jobs and be ridiculed by the media for what they have written.
"We wrote the book because we were fed up with the media and the lies they were telling and we thought we'd get a bit of the truth out," he said.
Merritt is a retired consulting engineer who lives in south-western Adelaide. He set up the South Australian arm of the Pauline Hanson Support Movement and is also a member of Graeme Campbell's Australia First Party.
There were calls yesterday to ban the book in Australia.
The Aboriginal elder, 65 year old Robert Toby, who stood up on the podium with Pauline Hanson at Rockhampton earlier this week in a show of support is to be confronted by other Aborigines in the area today.
Toby's son Robert (39) said that the family had distanced themselves from their father's comments which had caused "considerable community disquiet" according to local Aboriginal Legal Services administrator, Steve Vea Vea.
Toby said at the Hanson meeting, "The way Aborigines are living today is disgusting". He went on to say that money given to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander commission (ATSIC) by the Federal Government was not going to the right people.
While Toby spoke Ms Hanson stood by his side and afterwards raised his arm in a show of support. She said yesterday she stood by Toby "Because he stood by me and I am proud of him". Previously Toby had gone to Canberra to protest against Hanson.
"He was so disgusted with his own people's actions (after the protest in Canberra) he said he was going to contact me ," she said.
Speaking out yesterday former Queensland premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen said yesterday that the conservative parties would lose ground to One Nation, "I like her, she's strong, she's positive, she doesn't waffle," he said.
A former Queensland State Minister, Brian Austin, who was jailed in 1990 for rorting his expenses has claimed that Independent Senator Mal Colston was the victim of a witch hunt and that all federal MP's should be investigated.
"All over Australia there'd be 100 federal members who've done the same thing (as Senator Colston's alleged rorting)."
Austin said the others were happy to sit back and watch "Colston carry the can".
"I think that stinks," he said.
Extensive political commentary and links can be found on Palmer's Australian Politics page.
"Alongside the growing illiteracy in the traditional sense, computer literacy is not improving matters but exacerbating matters and in fact we may be grunting at each other in 100 years," he wrote.
"There is concern amongst some psychologists that (the Net) will produce a type of retarded personality, autistic personality, that is very, very good at hitting buttons and getting enormous amounts of data that they are unable to evaluate.
"There is a mistake made by people that what you get on the Internet is knowledge."
His comments, somewhat surprisingly, contradict the findings of a report involving 120 Net users in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Dear Sir,
Hooray for you! I am not familiar with Australian polotics but I am a
Floridian and very aware of the issues you are now addressing in your
country.
As an example: in the Florida Legislature a black representative from
south Florida has introduced legislation that would get rid of our State
Song..."Old Folks At Home" or better known to most of the world as "Way
Down Upon the Swannee River" - he claims it is a racist song.
Are you familiar with our State Song? Do you think it is racist? It
is ridiculous with all the things that need changing or improving in
our State that this man has nothing better to do than try and make
something into an "issue."
You are right...all people in a democracy should be treated equally.
We all know slavery was wrong, but like you, I never owned a slave, nor
did my mother or my grandmother or my great grandmother...let's give it
all a rest and try and "live and let live"
In our country the "politically correct" are paving the way to Hell.
People have lost their sense of humor. We need Will Rogers and Mark
Twain to come back to life and give us a good talking to!
Good luck with your efforts to bring equality to all
australians...white, brown or otherwise!
As far as the Asian influx goes...they are going everywhere...but then,
where can all the people go? We just have too damn many! A little
birth control would be good. Of course you don't have a border! Try
Mexico! In Florida we just have Cuba at our backdoor. What a beautiful
island! My parents spent their honeymoon there. Why can't we all just
try and get along? Seems like when one crisis is resolved then a new
one pops up! Since it's not Russia for us anymore...I guess it will
have to be China. Kinda scary since they are really in your neck of the
woods. The sad thing is, the Chinese people are just like you and
me...they want to live, raise a family, have a job etc. human beings
just aren't that different...it's the governments! who invented those
things?
Sorry for all the chatter but I just read your speech and it hit a
nerve...I know it took courage to say them in a publlic forum. Good
luck with your campaign.
By the way, I've never met an Aussie I didn't like! and I've met them
all over this planet! What grand folks!
See ya,
Subject: Aborigines and racism
Dear Sir,
It's been a while since I last dropped you a note, but rest assured, I
read this page every day. Pauline Hanson is my local member, and I have
followed her rise and rise since before the last federal election.
The one thing I would like to point out is that I really cannot read
hatred in anything she says or does. I think she has hit the nail right
on the head, when she calls part of her opponents "the aboriginal
industry". This is exactly what it is. A bunch of leftist, bleeding
heart fat cat bureaucrats and lawyers, sucking off the Australian
taxpayer just as hard as they can.
Aboriginal people have generally the same aspirations as the rest of us
- financial security, a future for their children, and a roof over their
heads. There are a number of aboriginal people who are successful in
our community, and this is a credit to their hard work and persistence,
in what can be at time an intolerant and prejudiced society.
By the same token, I live in Ipswich, and have had my car broken into
twice by aboriginal youths. I understand one of the boys had over 200
convictions, and not a day in jail. He was 17.
I think Paulines point is that despite the expenditure of around
$1billion per year for a number of years, there are still aboriginal
communities without even the most basic amenities. I know from first
hand experience, because in my travels, I have seen and visited
communities in northern South Australia, Queensland and the Northern
Territory.
In South Australia, I saw opthalmia (eye disease), early death from
alcoholism, petrol sniffing, and sugar diabetes. I also saw dog-shit
squalor, which shocked and sickened me. In north Queensland, I saw much
better living conditions, but still great social problems, such as
petrol sniffing and murder, due to idleness. In the Northern Territory,
I saw poverty, mosquito fever (first hand experience), open latrines and
one water tap between five families.
I would have to say in all cases, the aboriginal people I have met and
got to know are kind, intelligent, and friendly. But something is
missing, and I think it is leadership from within the aboriginal
communities - urban and rural. Also, there is no need for these people
to be "economically viable", because of the handout mentality engendered
by quarter of a century of the welfare state for aborigines.
Despite all the money that has been spent, the problems are as bad as
they have ever been. In fact, in terms of health, employment, and
self-respect, much of the aboriginal community was probably better off
in the old paternalistic, bad old days of missions and "black feller
wages".
So rather than trying to "shoot the messenger", more aborigines should
stand up and be counted, and be part of the positive change that has to
happen.
In terms of words of hate, division within the community, and offensive
behaviour, I think we need look no further than some of Pauline's more
vocal detractors. If you want to see violent racism, look no further
than the feral gangs of aboriginal youths who have beaten up American
and Singaporean soldiers visiting Australia over the past six months.
Regards
Subject: Launch of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party
Hi,
Pauline Hanson deserves and is intitled to the support of the Australian
Community. It is amazing how speaking the basic simple truth terrifies
the ones who seek power and influence without the desire to serve the
community.
Paul & Marion
Hi,
Organization: SHIN BETH
Hi,
I don't know who you are, I do not know anything about you but what I can
see from your Pauline Hanson's One Nation page is that you are a complete
asshole. By the way just to get the record straight, I am Irish, I am a
migrant and I just want to know are you going to publish my letter or are
you just going to be a complete racist bigot and only project one image,
instead of showing both sides and letting people make up their own minds.
That my friend is courage, that would be taking a risk because maybe all of
the intelligent people would see straight through the crap you are writing
and realise that Australia is a very rich place as a result of its
multiculturalism, as a result of its heritage that lies with the Aboriginal
and Islanders and if you take that away, you are left with a very empty
country that lacks any soul at all.
So I am writing to you to request that you put my mail into the hate mail
section of your page or are you too scared that too many people might
actually agree with me. If I don't see it there in the next few weeks, I
will know that you are the spineless person I first took you for. Here is
your chance to prove me wrong and make your page a little less biased. Can
you do it?
Sorcha Tormey
To you and yours, you vile pseudo intelligentsia. You think only Asiatics
are going to attack you? Wrong. You think you can simply say these things
with impunity? Wrong.
Freedom of expression carries with it a responsibility for what you say, so
be prepared to reap what ye sow....
Here's a small definition for you:
Both of which are precisely what Hanson espouses, pure and simple. I'd go
into detail, but I have no doubts whatsoever that you wouldn't comprehend a
word.
You really do think that you have rights to this country over its
Indeginous inhabitants, dont you. A people with the longest continuous
civilisation, and one of the most developed cultures on this planet, should
be subservient to the likes of you - caucasiods who have been here for less
than 300 years. You really do think that "Australian Culture" equates to
"white culture" dont you.
So, I look forward to seeing you and especially the arch _devil bitch_
herself whenever you have the courage to come to Perth. I can assure you,
the times of relaxed opposition to the rhetoric you quasi thinking peoples
exhibit is drawing to a close.
Me and mine will scatter you and yours to the winds.
Oh and btw, the web pages you claim to author are some of the worst
examples of styeless naivety I've seen in some time. Truly pathetic, no
doubt indicative of your own mental powers.
No peace devil

"The distinction I make is this. A social problem is one that concerns the way in which people live together in one society. A racial problem is a problem which confronts two different races who live in two separate societies, even if those societies are side by side. We do not want a society in Australia in which one group enjoy one set of privileges and another group enjoy another set of privileges."
I know which point of view I support sorry Al... whatever your name is...
This at a time when the lowest inflation figures since the 1992 recession sparked hope of an interest rate cut.
In the last year inflation has been held down to just 1.3% - with the last quarter recording just 0.2%.
The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) warned last night that industrial action would escalate next month if the government did not entertain across the board pay rises.
Have a good one.
