International:

A meeting of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party is taking place in Victoria at the South Barwon Civic Centre, 2 Colac Road, Belmont on Monday 19th May 1997. The meeting will commence at 7pm. Entry cost is Au$5.

The objects of the meeting are to:

There are some major and telling changes taking place in Australian politics right now. It is rather like the changing of the guard. The National Party are on the ropes in the bush and Ms Hanson's One Nation party is on the rise.

One cannot help but get the feeling that the damage is already done. Beyond repair and the desperate farmers of the bush will not forgive nor forget the party nor the man that they have supported in the past.

National Party leader seems to be somewhat dazed and living in another land, another time perhaps.... saying yesterday at the meeting with pastoralists at Longreach, "I don't feel under any more pressure than last week, last year or in opposition. In fact some of the weeks in opposition were far more pressure.

"We are making progress on Wik. There is a great deal of validation and extinguishment and a sunset clause in the ten point plan."

This at a time when the Prime Minister John Howard had just told the pastoralists gathered in National heartland that he would not shift on his ten point plan to be put before the Senate.

In fact Howard said that he was prepared to call for a double dissolution election if the Senate tried to amend his ten point plan.

He was jeered when he told the assembled farmers of his long time affection for the bush and was accused by many at question time by many of making "a bloody mess of Australia".

"...I can't guarantee it will get through the Senate. I can't guarantee you that I won't accept any alteration to it. I want to make that very clear.

"And can I also say to all of you that the plan when presented to the Senate is rejected by the Seante, Mr Fischer and I, as Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, have a very, very clear view of what we are intending to do. A very clear view

"I think you'll like it. Look you have my assurance you'll love it," Howard said.

In a series of specific guarantees Howard said, "You can't lose your land. The legislation we are going to introduce in Federal Parliament will confirm that situation and put beyond legal doubt that those sorts of fears are completely unfounded.

"We've had all this talk over the past few months that you'll need the permission of native title claimants to put in a fence, to sink a dam or do anything that is incidental to the carrying on of your business.

"Can I say: No, No, No, that cannot happen."

Outspoken National MP Bob Katter came up with a compromise solution yesterday suggesting that thousands of Aborigines currently renting homes be given the title to the land - a move which would cost the Australian government Au$10 billion.

"Native title is bad for pastoralists and bad for Aborigines because it doesn't deliver certainty to anyone," Katter said, "Aborigines can't leave their Wik titled land to their kids, they can't sell it and they can't mortgage it.

"The way it works at the moment, good Aborigines who rent houses subsidise bad Aborigines by paying the repair bills of Aborigines who smash up their (rented) homes."

Kerry Packer is out to upstage Kerry Stokes after the Channel Seven Chairman played his card in the Fairfax game.

Stokes' Channel Seven have been giving viewers a chance to win Au$10,000 each night and gained top rating at the Six O'Clock news spot over Packer's Channel Nine.

But now Packer has hit back with a ruse of his own - Au$20,000 a nigh which jackpots until it is won. Shortly thereafter (last Monday) Channel Nine News displaced Channel Seven with top ratings for the first time in three weks.

Political:

Pauline Hanson's latest senior advisor, David Oldfield, spoke about his work for One Nation yesterday saying, "There is an underlying group of Australians out there whose opinions, for the first time ever, are going to make a difference.

"They may not be publicly outspoken but in the privacy of the polling booth they will vote for One Nation."

Mr Oldfield first met Ms Hanson in a Canberra nightspot in December last year when he came to her aid after she was abused by another diner.

He said that Ms Hanson was the most courageous politician in living memory.

"What attracted me to Pauline was that she stood up and said what she thought. The most seasoned politician from either major party would never do that."

He is also a long time friend of One Nation National Director David Ettridge.

Oldfield takes over the role from David Thomas who resigned last week for personal reasons saying that he wanted to reurn with his family to northern Queensland.

You say:

Hayden`s Monkey Trick.

In March 1996 Bill Hayden, in an address to the National Press Club, said: `Mrs Hanson`s views DID NOT represent Queensland redneck racism and she was not preaching racism.` Bill then went on to say: `Mrs Hanson had won the Oxley seat BECAUSE POLITICIANS AND THE GOVERNMENT WERE NO LONGER LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE.`

Is it not then passing strange that Bill should now say he is, quote:
`Thinking of setting up a non-partisan party to work against Mrs Hanson and her One Nation Party?`

You were right the first time, Bill, but if you keep turning such rapid somersaults the people might well confuse you with the organ-grinder`s monkey. They might even begin to wonder who the organ-grinder is.

Bill.

Has anyone noticed yet how the new 15% Tax rebate provided by the 1997 Budget on savings is actually only going to give back to everyone what the banks are currently taking in there new fees anyway?

I wonder if the banks will now increase fees because of this since they know that everyone will now have 15% more of their interest to give them.

Am i just being paranoid or what???????
