Prime Minister John Howard has refused to direct the Liberal Party to make sure their preferences are directed away from Pauline Hanson's One Nation party.
This despite the plaintive pleas of the leader of the Democrats, Cheryl Kernot. Her plea has been joined by the leader of the Australian Labor Party, Kim Beazley, following the revelation yesterday (according to the latest Morgan poll) that Ms Hanson could lose her seat - despite having the greatest voter support in Oxley - if preferences were directed away from her.
Beazley said that Labor would undertake to ensure that all preferences were directed away from Ms Hanson.
This week Ms Hanson appointed a new political advisor, ex-Liberal David Oldfield from Manly (near Sydney) who has already been branded a racist by the mainstream media for comments he was alleged to have made in 1995 when he complained about an Aboriginal flag being flown in front of the town hall during National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander week.
In 1994 he was at the centre of another row when he referred to Italian born councillor Nancy Burridge as a blow-in at a council meeting.
Ms Hanson last night hit out at accusations that her staff were racist saying that the Prime Minister's staff and those of senior ministers were not subject to personal scrutiny by the media "so why should mine?"
"I am absolutely fed up that every time someone comes on board, they are put through the wringers," Ms Hanson said.
Mr Oldfield said that the remarks were taken out of context and there was nothing racist about them.
"I believe they (the remarks) were taken out of context for political purposes in 1994 and are now being taken out of context for political purposes in 1997," he said.
A terrible punishment was meted out on a Gold Coast man who had turned police informant against orgainsed crime. The unnamed man who was supposed to be under police protection yesterday had his mouth wired shut with a coat hanger and his wrists and knees wired together by pushing other coat hangers through the flesh.
Gold Coast conman Peter Foster is being released today on Au$250,000 bail.
Yesterday he won his bail application after Queensland's most senior magistrate accepted that he was once a spy for the British police. In April British police had served Foster with an extradition warrant just one day before he was to be released from the Arthur Gorrie prison.
The court was told yesterday that recent media coverage about his work as a spy could endanger his life in prison.
Foster has had to surrender his passport and report to police daily and live with his mother in Sufers Paradise as part of his bail conditions...
Savings:
Dear Sir,
I am an aged pensioner and I have decided to join the One Nation party. One Nation will be receiving my cheque in the mail shortly. I applaud your efforts. I know that "they" will make your road tougher and tougher for you, but you do have tremendous support in the community, much more than I have seen for any politician during my lifetime, so hang in there please as we all need you.
You truly are the voice of the average aussie. I just hope that its not too late to get this once wonderful country back again.
Also like to wish Ms Hanson a Happy Birthday for the 27th.
Yours sincerely
Judith

First of all I would like to say that this e-mail falls into neither of the categories proposed on your web page. It is most definitely *not* "Support Mail", but neither is it "Hate Mail" - in fact your choice of words is a rather sad attempt at devaluing one side of the debate and I ask you to change the wording on your page to (for example) "Mail For", and "Mail Against".
As a new Australian I recently attended my citizenship ceremony with nearly 400 people from over 50 countries - a true celebration of many cultures coming together as one nation (please note the capitalisation). Australia has a long history of multiculturalism, and this is the main reason that I chose to become a citizen - what better place to live than a society rich in its diversity, with many influences and new ideas from around the world.
The rise of Pauline Hanson and the One Nation Party is obviously a concern to me although it does not come as a great surprise. Throughout history, populist movements have gained prominence by blaming immigrants and other minority groups for current social and economic problems. Unfortunately, such movements only serve to detract attention from the fundamental problems that *Governments* themselves should be addressing.
Ms. Hanson's stance on immigration seems to be central to the philosophy of both herself and her party, and in her maiden speech to parliament she said:-
MAIN COUNTRIES OF BIRTH OF THE POPULATION (1995)
I strongly, object to Ms. Hanson using mis-information to promote an
immigration policy based on race and I would be grateful if you would publish this protest
against her policies and her party on your web page.

I too appreiciate that fact that you accept both pro and anti ONP letters cause here's an anti one. :)
Take a look at Australia now. Our international reputation amongst all of our Asian neighbours is appauling. Just when we were starting become a significant part of Asia economically the Dishonourable Member for Oxley opens her big mouth, claiming she speaks for mainstream Australia, of which my family is obviously not a part of, and we're back where we started from.
Has Ms Hanson achieved anthing positive? I don't think so. She has managed to split a nation.
What about her claim to speak on behalf of mainstream Australia. I don't know if she was taught math or not but 7% isn't very mainstream.
And here's a little something I heard about which quite amused me:
There is a t-shirt with a picture of Martin Luther King and a caption below saying "I have a dream". On the reverse of the t-shirt is a picture of the never smiling Pauline Hanson with a caption saying "I have a fish shop".
Well that about sums it up.
