However chairman Brian Powers admitted that the decision was "reinforced by a concern that this transaction could have hampered PBL's ability to achieve other key strategic initiatives under consideration".
The move now puts PBL in the powerful position to buy out Brierley Investments Limited's 14% shareholding....
This follows the move by the Federal Government to change the cross-media ownership laws to allow Packer to increase his ownership in Fairfax. A move which is defended by Federal Treasurer Peter Costello who said, "We will protect the national interest. We will ensure that there is a vibrant media in this country and we will make sure that policy is administered in accordance with the law.
"To get obsessed with the ownership is to overlook I think the really significant people in newspapers - the editors and the journalists."
But as News Limited's Courier Mail business editor Joseph Dowling points out on page 15 of today's paper in Fairfax and get the company well on the way to taking over effective ownership....
"He (Packer) will emerge as Australia's most powerful media baron, running the nation's top-rating network, and some of its most influential newspapers in the Fairfax broadsheets.
"And while Fairfax journalistic purists may resent Packer imposing his will on the editorial content of the papers, he will have the power to appoint the editors who will do his bidding."
We also know that she had a breakfast meeting on Sunday morning which attracted about 800 protesters - many of whom were arrested by police.
At both events Ms Hanson gained a standing ovation from her supporters.
In the light of her success the Coalition Federal government geared up for an anti-One Nation push this week with two of the front bench ministers speaking out against Ms Hanson.
Treasurer Peter Costello said Ms Hanson could no longer say, "she was out of her depth". (Not that she ever has.)
"She's given aid and comfort to a whole lot of people behind that banner who stand for things that the Australian public would be horrified about and its time to repudiate the ideas," he said.
"It's time to say Pauline Hanson is out of excuses, her ideas are bankrupt, she has no plan for Australia and the divisive and vicious future that she is promulgating will be repudiated."
Senator Robert Hill, the leader of the Senate said, "If we allow her party to continue to gain support, the direction that they are advocating is not in the best interests of this country - it's terrifying, it's an isolationist direction."
A spokesman for the Prime Minister said he would not descend to "personal politics" however he would attempt to discredit Ms Hanson's stand on immigration when he launched the Australasian branch of the Asia Society on Thursday.
In an interesting turn of events the National chairman of the Australia, Israel and Jewish Affairs Council, Mark Leibler, expressed his concern about Ms Hanson's views - even though she cannot be accused, even by the Australian media, of saying anything anti-Semetic.

I have to give you a lot of credit for standing up and actually saying what is on your mind Pauline.
I live in the United States, and it is practically impossible to speak the truth here and not be called a racist.
Our government has recently undertaken a new policy, urging people to volunteer to do work to clean up neighborhoods, etc. There was a big show of support by our President and past Presidents, and it seems to have hit a favorable note with the public in general.
What I think is really going on is that the government has become so tired of spending money on ungrateful minorities only to see them destroy the projects in short order because "whitey" built it, that they are in fact saying that if you want anything done at all, don't look to the government to provide it anymore, but look to yourselves to get out there and do it.
Whether or not they are bright enough to realize that the teat has just been pulled away or not, I don't know, but I do believe that it is headed in the right direction finally. People need to earn something to respect it!
Keep up your good work, and God bless you.

Subject: News page
Hello, I find your web page informative and useful but it is sad to see you 'publish' some of the more extreme and offensive emails you've received (esp. re. Pauline Hanson).
I will not be able to allow my children to access your site if you keep this up. I realise and appreciate your intentions, but is it really necessary to publish such language?

Apologies accepted and thank you. I know something of what Mrs Hanson is
going through, we have received the same vilification from homo activists
here in Tasmania. At present, as one of the organisers of Mrs.Hansons'
visit to Tassie, we are gearing up for some aggravation, although we hope
the meeting will be peaceful.
All these "anti-racists" and homosexuals claim they want a more tolerant
society, but they are only tolerant of their own viewpoint, as you know
well.
It's a sad state of affairs, I hope Mrs.Hanson will do some good.
yours,
Subject: Misrepresentation
"Today's Headlines an Aussie's viewpoint" is unfotunatly
misrepresentation.
While Ms Hanson and her politics maybe of great importance to you (as is
your right) it is misreprensation, day after day, to portray her trials
and tribulations as "Today's Headlines".
Not so long ago the "Aussie" did have a viewpoint on "Today's Headlines"
and at times provide provactive commentary. Today, unfortunately, this
page is no different to the mainstream media of Packer or Murdoch in
persuing a predetermined political aggenda.
I, respecfully, urge you not to lose sight of the forest because of the
trees.
Apropos of nothing I conclude with this fact: primary production
(agriculture and mining) contribute less than 13% of GDP by industry
sector. What proportion of GDP is attritbutal to pastoral leases?

Subject: Launch of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party
To whom it may concern,
After reading the full transcript of Pauline Hanson's One Nation launch
speech (and I found it difficult to read it all) I could not help feeling a
sense of sadness. I believe that Ms Hanson truly thinks that she is right
in what she preches, and that is a tragedy. Despite claims to the
contrary, she is brewing an atmosphere of bigotry, intolerance,
"scapegoatery", and, dare I say it, hatred. Despite the numerous
misleading statistics, the fact remains that she is largely uninformed.
The reason that Australia is in such a terrible state is because of
Caucasians, what you would call "real Australians", and not the Chinese,
Vietnamese, Japanese, Jews, Aboriginals, or anyone else. The culprit, the
deserving scapegoat, is the white wealthy liberal-philosophising
conservative-voting economic-rationalising executive. Take BHP. It pays
no tax. It cripples a city. It wrecks the environment. IT IS A WHITE
CORPORATION. What about CRA? The US Goverment? Numerous American
corporations. They did it. Economic rationalisation did it. When people,
human beings, became "human resources", "assets", numbers, that was when
the Aussie battler died. If you want to make a change, unite Australia,
don't divide it. Please.
