International:

The Australian Rugby League (ARL) had their opportunity to respond to Super League's appeal in the Federal Court yesterday. Speaking for the ARL Bob Ellicot QC said that when trial judge James Burchett caught News out behaving dishonestly they launched one of the most vicious judicial attacks possible.

The ARL is opposing the appeal by Super League, News Limited and others against Justice Burchett's judgement and orders which effectively closed the whole Super League concept down until at least the year 2000.

Mr Ellicot said that Justice Burchitt was depicted as an emotional incompetent, a picture that was a joke.

"The reality, of course, is that the judge found them out. He laid bare News' dishonesty."

Political:

A major political debate will take place in the State Parliament of Victoria today. The debate will focus on whether marijuana should be legalised. The state has the power to legalise the banned substance. If marijuana is legalised it must surely open the floodgate to the drug being easily available throughout Australia.

It is quite scary that the decision by politicians in one part of the country could have such a major effect on the future of the drug, the way it is cultivated, distributed and sold to the rest of the country.

Personally, I hope that they vote "no" as smoking cigarettes is bad enough.

Business:

The deal which looked sold don't look sold no more. Gee there is a bit of money being thrown around now! New South Wales based St George Bank has upped the anti raising its counter bid to a massive Au$827.5 million in an attempt to overturn the formation of the new "super" financial institution in Queensland.

St George, which is itself under threat of takeover by the National Australia Bank, last night lifted its Metway offer by 15 cents a share to Au$4.77. That compares favourably with the government proposal which would have seen Metway shareholders offered Au$4.65 a share.

The Queensland State Government is now under pressure to raise its bid.

Sounds like an auction house to me, except the bigger fish like National Australia Bank are waiting in the wings...

A bank probe initiated by the Federal treasurer, Peter Costello, is expected to result in home interest rates being lowered. For too long the home loan market has been seen as the cash cow for the major banks who have extracted huge Au$ billion profits from screwing the average Joe Blow trying to earn an honest living and owning a home.

Sport:

Australian men's hockey coach believed that last night's 4-3 win against India at Colmslie was their best Olympic preparation match yet. He said that it had been Australia's toughest match in the four nation series. The series includes New Zealand and South Africa and is being used by the teams to gear up for the Atlanta Olympics.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Beautiful day once again. Blue skies, cool, turning warm, morning and all to be enjoyed in the global office!
