International:

Independent Federal Member for Oxley, Pauline Hanson, is in the news again. This time she spoke from from Canberra and her words quickly became headline news.

Her controversial remarks about the funding of Aboriginal groups have been welcome but she is going to have to watch herself when she says that the attempts at reconciliation between the whites and the Aborigines in Australia has failed and should be abandoned.

Ms Hanson was targeting the annual Au$4.5 million funding paid to the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation. The chairman, Aboriginal Patrick Dobson, refused to comment on Ms Hanson's claims.

She said "Aborigines who support me say that all they want is to be treated like ordinary Australians with the opportunity to get a job and enjoy good health, education and housing."

Political:

Prime Minister John Howard is standing firm in the face of national strikes planned to halt his reforms on industrial relations.

Mr Howard said that the reforms were the highlight of his government so far. He claimed that they were vital to halt a slide in Australia's competitiveness and living standards.

The ACTU, which has labelled the reforms as cruel, revealed a plan to march on Parliament House on August the 19th.

Business:

More than 1000 jobs are expected to be lost in Queensland following the proposed merger of Suncorp, Metway Bank, the Queensland Investment Development Corp and the Bank of Queensland.

The comment made by the state Labor opposition leader Peter Beattie rejected the proposal because of the job losses.

The Coalition state government replied that although the job losses would be large there would be no need for retrenchments as there was a 20% natural attrition rate in the existing entities.

Sport:

Australian Football League team Fitzroy will ask its members to vote on a propsed merger with North Melbourne within the month chairman Dyson Hore-Lacy revealed yesterday. The chairman said that because of the poor financial state of the club the members really had no other option but to accept the merger.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another day in the "big smoke" today. Absolutely perfect day again. It was quite warm overnight - probably low teens (celcius) and the sun is dominant now over a radiant blue sky.
