International:

Australian diplomats attended the opening of the congress of the National League of Democracy (NLD) in Rangoon, Burma to show Australia's support for democracy there. The military government has been systematically arresting the key supporters of Aung San Suu Kyi the remarkable leader of the NLD. Australia has been joined by the US, Tokyo, Germany Britain and France in their demands that the military government should immediately release the political prisoners who have been taken to stifle San Suui's chances in the upcoming election.

A senior Australian diplomat who resigned after being accused of being a paedophile was a member of a Philippines sex ring which abused hundreds of Philippino children.

The former diplomat, Robert Scoble, took sex holidays to a town in the Philippines while working as Australia's second highest representative in Manila. Australian Federal police have been shown documents linking Scoble and six other Australians to a paedophile ring of at least fifty men and almost six hundred children of both sexes, aged between seven and seventeen.

Political:

Its the day of the diplomat!

In parliament Alexander Downer revealed that three ex-Labor politicians are sitting pretty on the highest paid jobs in the game even though the diplomatic offices are far from being the most important or largest. Imagine - the ambassador for Harare (an ex-Labor politician) is getting a higher income than the ambassador to the United States! And the ambassador to the Hague is about Au$40,000 better off each year than his counterpart in the key trading nation of Japan!

The little "jobs for the boys scam" was revealed in Parliament last week much to the embarrassment of the Labor opposition.

Business:

One of Australia's leading business groups has accused the Reserve Bank of holding back the economy because of "phantom concerns" about inflation.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) yesterday said the economy needed a reduction in interest rates as a matter of priority.

In a scathing attack the ACCI said that the Reserve Bank's policy on interest rates needed to be reviewed to ensure economic growth was not "endlessly sacrificed at the altar of supressing inflation."

So here we go again fellows, up one day and down the next... even the big boss upstairs could be excused for being confused.

Sport:

After the trouncing given to the Queensland maroons in their first game against the New South Wales blues last Monday the selectors are having a good look at who should be replaced for the next match. The selectors meet at midday today to evaluate the poor performance of the maroons. The team is expected to be announced at 2.30pm today.

Broncos five-eighth, Kevin Walters is not holding his breath. Walters, by far the best player in Queensland in that position put the nose of the Australian Rugby League heirarchy out of joint because of his continuing support for the doomed Super League.

Social:

A new report has revealed that few of the new age men are willing to help at home in Australia. The study found "general agreement" among women that men worked more hours than they needed to because they lacked more pressing things to do.

Women also complained that male managers worked longer hours "inefficiently" but they did not like their staff to leave early even if they were "super-efficient".

Yes, you got it right the researchers were two women, namely Belinda Probert and Fiona Macdonald.

Well Belinda and Fiona the paper you used to establish those "results" would probably have saved a couple of trees.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Beautiful day, sunny getting warm after a cool night... and a day at the global office to boot. Have a great day all of you!
