International:
Here in Australia the impact of Super League on the News Limited empire is best demonstrated by the % advertising weight carried in
papers such as the Sunday Mail which appeared today. The first 3 pages have about 20% advertising content; pages 4 to 7 about 25% and
from then on you might as well have bought an advertising sheet! Page 8, 10, 14 have full page ads; page 9 about 30% advertising;
pages 11,13, 15, over 50% advertising; page 12 about 20% advertising; pages 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 etc.. well over 75%
and up to 90% advertising!
The trouble is that it is the only Sunday newspaper... perhaps they should drop the word "news"? Good time for a competitor to spring
forth one would think!
Political:
In an interesting twist to the change of government the inflated prices of housing in Canberra is starting to fall. Canberra is the
capital of the bureaucrats and the home of Parliament. During the Keating and Hawke years the city flourished with 1000s of government jobs being
created for things people didn't really need, do or care about. Now with the Coalition in the big chop is on its way for all the excessive
fat in the system. It appears that there is an aweful lot of it in Canberra! Seems like the landlords in the landlocked capital are for the
first time in years at the mercy of prospective tenants..
Business:
Bottles of pure Queensland mountain spring water are being exported to a number of Asian countries by 3 mates all aged 23 years old.
The first bottles of Cooroy Mountain spring water will travel to China under the Blue Gum label over the next few months.
Sport:
Seems like feelings are still running high between players in the Australian Rugby League (ARL) camp and those from the deposed Super
League camp. The feelings are exposed quite clearly by championship players like Glenn Lazarus a Brisbane Broncos and Super League
recruit currently in the heart of ARL country in New South Wales. Glenn has said that he will walk off the job and come right back home if
anyone passes any snide remarks about Super League.
Nya, nya, nya, nya, nya!! Come on boys grow up and enjoy the experience it cost Rupert the most -
your dented pride will recover... in time!
Social:
New car buyers are enjoying a bonanza after years of fast rising prices in the car market. The Australian dollar, having climbed to
nearly 80 cents since the Coalition win in March this year, has lowered prices with discounts being the order of the day as fierce
competitition hits the market.
