International:

Danish police were accused of incompetence yesterday after they freed deported terrorist Mohamed Hassanien. Hassanien, as reported yesterday, is wanted for questioning by the FBI in the United States over the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Centre.

He was arrested on Monday by a joint ASIO-AFP operation code named Dynamo after he slipped through the anti-terrorist security net at Sydney airport last month - using the passport of a dead Danish man.

A Danish court released him yesterday after fining him for false passport charges.

Political:

Personal Family Court case details were put back on the Internet for public access yesterday after their short-lived release last month caused an outcry.

Federal Attorney - General Darryl Williams, QC, restored the Family Court of Australia on-line service after withdrawing it for possible privacy breaches. The information which includes names, financial, marital and work histories was put back on the Internet after an inquiry found no wrong doing.

Business:

Any attempt by News Limited to increase its shareholding in the Fairfax media group would not be allowed ahead of the Federal Government's media law review, Canberra sourced indicated yesterday.

News is understood to have approached the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission about the possibility of lifting its stake in Fairfax from 5% to 17%.

Communications Minister Richard Alson will shortly announce details of a review of cross-media ownership rules, which he has promised will report before the end of this calendar year.

Sport:

Australian Rugby League (ARL) chief executive John Quayle spat the dummy at the eight Super League players who declined the invitation to be part of the official Australian team selected to play the New Zealand 'All Gold' team.

Test winger Rod Wishart, an ARL player said that he felt robbed of his opportunity to represent Australia because the decision by the eight players has turned the series into a farce.

The ARL has been forced to cancel the first of the planned tests while they look for alternate players or give the whole idea away.

Social:

In a sad reflection of the image perceived by some Aussies of the indigenous Aborigines as drunks, the Mayor of Townsville yesterday claimed that homeless Aborigines who slept in the city's parks demanded that talks be held early in the morning as they would be "too drunk" later in the day.

Cr Mooney said that he had wanted a 1pm meeting with the homeless Aborigines because he was busy with official functions earlier in the day. The Council was informed that the Aborigines would only meet with the Mayor before 11am because they would otherwise be too drunk to hold sensible talks about their plight.

The Townsville City Council has been ordered by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission to hold a mediation session today to try to solve some of the problems associated with public drinking and squatting in the city's Hanran Park.

The Aboriginal squatters or "parkies" are mainly homeless Aborigines from Palm Island. They filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission alleging Law 51 discriminated against them on the grounds of their Aboriginality and on disability caused by alcoholism.
