International:

Terrorism struck Australia in an off-hand manner when an alleged terrorist, Mohamed Hassanien, travelling on a forged passport, landed in Australia in May this year. Hassanien who is from an unnamed Middle Eastern country has been arrested because of his alleged involvement in the 1993 bombing of the New York World Trade Centre.

The 34 year old has been expelled under guard to Europe where he is expected to be formally charged.

Hassanien was able to gain anonymity by mixing with the Muslim community in Melbourne. Hassanien has been linked to a militant Muslim group and is wanted for questioning on a number of charges over and above the bombing in 1993.

Political:

Prime Minister John Howard yesterday accused Queensland of doing a backflip on gun control. The State Liberal machine has demanded a please explain from Premier Rob Borbidge in relation to statements that he has made over the last few days. The softening of the Premier's stance comes after sustained pressure by the rural community who have threatened to stand against the National Party in the next state election. Borbidge has said that Queensland would allow farmers to own semi-automatic guns to protect themselves from ferral pigs.

Business:

Troubled metals and engineering group Australian National Industries (ANI) yesterday opted for a Au$167 million public float as the best way to offload its Coates Hire business.

Coates Hire is the largest equipment hire business in Australia. The Au$167.4 million float will comprise 68 million Au$2 shares and repayment of a debt of about Au$31 million in loans to the parent ANI.

Sport:

Got to tell ya its all happening in rugby league. Eight of the players selected for the Australian team to play the New Zealand All Gold's have written to the Australian Rugby League (ARL) declining their selection - because of their involvement with Super League and restrictive moves by News Limited.

To make matters worse the Super League supported New Zealand Rugby League have now sued the ARL for claiming that the matches are "tests" as the ARL have not gathered a representative New Zealand team.

Everybody is suing everybody else and the game has fast gone to pot.

Social:

Women were being given a "Mills and Boon" model of motherhood through media images and public rhetoric, a visiting professor claimed yesterday.

Professor Lesley Barclay, of Sydney's University of Technology, said couples about to become parents were denied the "reality checks" of previous generations.

"The reality checks that used to be built in through larger families, brothers, sisters and neighbourhoods, no longer exist," she said.

As a result new parents were having their expectations violated by reality, causing distress and loss of confidence.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Warm day after a cool start - beautiful and sunny.

Another very successful day in the "big smoke" today. We have gained two more large accounts and are taking on new staff to help us in the further development of the company's business.
