Today's Headlines
Monday 15th April 1996
International:
About Au$65 million in free publicity is generated for the Queensland tourism industry largely through television lifestyle programmes.
The softsell marketing campaign by the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation and industry operators was a massive increase
on 1994, when Au$38 million worth of space and air time was gained by Queensland tourism operators.
Political:
In a fairly obvious reaction the Aboriginal groups have united against Prime Minister John Howard and the Coalition government reform
agenda with tensions now reaching a crisis point.
Aboriginal leaders from across the nation last night criticised John Howard of being a "rabble rouser" and warned of a return to the
"great unrest" and disruptions to the Sydney 2000 OLYMPICS. The questionable characters
referred to in earlier editions (archived) are coming out of the woodwork in
their droves. I wonder why, maybe they read the papers?
Business:
Queensland's financial giant, Suncorp, is behind the Au$244 million funding for the sharemarket float of a new hotel group.
The company, Grand Hotels Group Limited, is seeking to raise the funds to enable it to acquire two key capital city hotels.
It proposes to buy further 4 to 5 star hotels later.
Sport:
Well isn't Aussie international golfer Greg Norman causing a stir at the US Masters? Leading by 6 with a 17 under with one round to play.
Let's hope that he doesn't suffer from one of those miserable crashes that he has experienced in the past. Well, after 10 holes it
appears the Norman is 3 over for the day and now leads Nick Faldo by only one shot!! Ouch...
Social:
The national strategy against child abuse developed by state and territory leaders has been hijacked by a "voyeuristic" response
to peadophilia a leading child abuse group has claimed. Queensland Abused Children Trust Chairman, Dave Wood, yesterday warned
that the national focus on child abuse and paedophilia was totally missing the point and threatened to exacerbate the problem.
Personal trivia:
Lovely quiet day yesterday. It has been getting cooler over the last week, and for the first time in many months we have had to sleep with a quilt
over us at night. Normally a sheet would suffice.
Young Alex launches his business Alex's Scribbles this week. An occasion
we are all looking forward to.
