A quite remarkable achievement.
In the other corner we have a self-proclaimed feminist and author, Jocelynne Scott, who has refused to accept her Queen's Honour of AO (or Officer in the General Division) until Australia becomes a republic. She will accept it after Australia becomes a republic. She has done a good job on publicising her stand too with photo opportunities being provided to everybody including the kid on the block with a polaroid. I guess she will have aurtograph sessions in shopping centres soon.
My view is if she felt so strongly about the Queen she should have just refused the honour altogether. It is kids like young Susie Maroney who make me feel proud to be an Aussie.
The Coalition government are about to re-write the rules allowing for cheap imports of CDs.
Guess who blew the buzzer on the Labor mateship racket - none other than Professor Fels the man in charge of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. To quote him "The new Government brings no baggage in terms of commitments to the record industry, in terms of having a bunch of mates in the industry, like some of the ministers in the previous government."
One wonders what the financial benefit might have been that so inspired protection for the men making the bucks in imports of CDs.
It appears that O'Reilly has got his feelers out now that the Howard government have promised to change the media ownership laws which have allowed Packer and Murdoch to dominate the Australian media scene.
In other news the Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been taking out full page colour ads to promote the float of the rest of their stock.
Susie we are proud of you. Pity your name seemed to have slipped off the Queen's honours list - I can think of at least one that should have been passed your way.
Hey, I really am starting to feel really strong about this. Here we had Paul Keating and his cohorts leading the republican movement from a position of priviledge and yet the loyalty for Lizzy and the Queen Mum remains as strong as ever here. It has now become hip and the quickest surest way for getting cheap publicity if you take a stand against the monarchy. Almost a religious experience it would appear. Yet, what happened to tradition.
I like the idea of seeing the royals strut their stuff. I mean let's face it they must feel bloody stupid at times yet they cover their embarrassment really well. The hanger-oners like Di and Fergie are bad news - pity the rules of Henry VIII still don't apply - bet there would be no dissention in the ranks then, but let's face it the royal family is good.
Good for pride, tradition and some links with our past and hopefully our future.
By the way happy birthday Elizabeth R!
