Today's Headlines
Good Friday 5th April 1996
International:
The past Australian Governor Bill Hayden has made himself unpopular with several of our Asian neighbours calling them racist.
In other news alleged paedophile-in-hiding, Philip Bell, speaking from somewher in Switzerland said: "I am in a lovely place with gorgeous
surrounds and lots of friends to make me cups of tea." What inspirational stuff to report on... must be Easter long weekend.
Political:
In local politics Ipswich has once again made the news with television cameras being turfed out of a local council meeting.
The Mayor and ten out of the twelve councillors are sick of the television stations coming in and trying to cast the impression that the city
is being run like a joke. The other two, generally disliked councillors, appear to be behind the invitation to the media with predictable comments
of "Where's the democracy" accompanied by great theatrical grandstanding... when the cameras were evicted. What a farce.
Time they grew up and ran the city not a puppet show.
The catch cry of television reporting on the Ipswich City Council is: "You could sell tickets to people who wanted to watch the antics of
the Ipswich City Councilllors."
Business:
Well the Coalition have approved, in principle, the establishment of another uranium mine in the Kakadu National Reserve. The undergound
mine will extract ore from the richest uranium reserve in the world.
Sport:
In rugby league (yes its actually happening) Wests beat Auckland 22 to 8 in a very spiteful match with lots of infighting between players.
Social:
Australia embarks on a four day holiday break. Well, the bureaucrats seemed to have shut down last weekend with a lot of sickies being
the order of the day in government departments. Not a good time if you want to actually get something done! Yesterday I was talking about
bureaucrats with cushy jobs. Maybe changes will see more loyalty to
the task in the future.
In a blow to the feminist movement a widespread global survey has come up with conclusive evidence that women would much rather
do housework and care for their family than seek out a career.
Personal trivia:
The weather is once again beautiful. After all the rains in early 1996 isn't it ironic that we had the driest March in 35 years! Today will
be spent in the global office working on a web site for a major media company.
