Memories, Warburton and racism

Remember Keith Warburton? The 59 year old unemployed man who was knocked senseless at the One Nation meeting in Dandenong.

Until recently Warburton has had weekly rehabilitation sessions for his memory loss, speech, handwriting and balance, and has abandoned a course at Swinburne University because of the effect the assault had on him. The media has been big on predictions that Hanson would cause racist thugs to attack Asians. The reality was that it was the media which provoked anti-Hanson thugs to beat up innocent people like Keith Warburton.

Reporter Michael Duffy said that the violent mobs who protested against Hanson were no doubt provoked by the frequent claims in the media that she would cause an increase in racial vilification and a decline in the number of Asian students coming to Australia. Well, the figures are in. According to the Ethnic Affairs Commission of New South Wales, complaints of vilification in 1996-97 were 25% less than the previous year and that the university's marketing body, IDP Education Australia, reported that in the past 12 months, the enrolment of international (mainly Asian) students increased by 22%. Frank Devine had previously pointed out that claims that Hanson had caused a fall off in tourist bookings were equally far fetched.

Duffy says, "So, sorry about that, Pauline. I wouldn't want you to think we just invented these predictions to try to scare you into submission. Or that we serious journalists and editors believe we are some sort of intellectual elite, and that we despise and fear the mass of our fellow countrymen, to the point where we believe they can't be trusted to talk about certain issues.

"Actually, now that it's over, I wonder what got into us. The notion that Asia - which includes the world's biggest police state and several severely racist countries - would really be offended by the words of one independent member of parliament and her small and disorganised group of supporters, is kind of weird. Not to mention that we ought to care if it did. It's all a bit cringe making."

Terry Lane in an article headed "Australia's just mad about Pauline" (Sunday Age 1/5/97 said that the hysterical reaction to Hanson was due in part to her "playing the role of a naughty child who points out the embarrassing truth". He said that people who he assumed shared his liberal views on freedom of speech and the right of all of us to say what is in our minds have been cheering on the hooligans. Normally sane people would have been applauding the actions of mobs in Perth and Geelong who censored Hanson and her supporters by brawling stupid and unintelligible slogans. Lane concludes by stating the Dr Mahathir, the Prime Minister of Malaysia reckons that the Asianisation of Australia is inevitable, desirable and will happen within the lifetime of most of us although he has said that Australia cannot be considered part of Asia until it is 70% ethnic Asian.

Lane goes on - "Mahathir is called a statesman. Pauline Hanson is appalled and wants to prevent it. She is called a racist. The rest of us don't want to even talk about it. Which is the response that you would expect from a silly little people."

Sandbag your computer against Y2K

Sandbag your computer against Y2K bugs

Andy Walker Citizen Special

While you're stocking up on fresh water, food supplies and batteries for the year 2000 bug crisis, don't forget to digitally sandbag your office computers.

There are three areas you should examine to be sure that all of your software, hardware and data are compliant so that when the clock ticks over to Jan. 1, 2000, your computers continue to function properly:

  1. Your computer's BIOS. That's the part of the machine that stores all kinds of basic information about your computer, as well as the date. The BIOS is referenced when a computer is turned on.
  2. Your operating system. That's DOS or Windows or the Mac OS.
  3. Your applications. That includes programs such as Lotus, Excel, Word, WordPerfect and other data-creating applications.

Finally, you should be concerned about data files too.

Spreadsheets are at particular risk, as they often have built-in data crunchers called macros that allow on-the-fly calculations.

Ask yourself these questions:

- Was your IBM-compatible PC manufactured after 1996?

Most newer computers have compliant BIOSes, but some are still non-complaint.

Check with your manufacturer to obtain the latest BIOS. It's easy to install from a floppy disk.

- Does it have a 32-bit Windows operating system loaded on it? -- that's Windows 95 or 98 , or Windows NT.

All versions of Windows are susceptible to Y2K bugs. Windows 98 is the most recent operating system and has the fewest bugs.

Fixes and information on all the known Y2K issues for all Microsoft operating systems can be found here

If you have a Macintosh computer running any version of Mac OS, you can also rest easy. All Macs back to the Macintosh 128K computer (introduced in 1984) allows the correct representation of dates up to 6:28:15 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2040.

- Is all the software on your system newer than the computer?

Most reputable software vendors have Y2K compliancy statements on their Web sites.

Be aware that older applications that run under MS-DOS only are likely to have Y2K problems.

So who is at risk? Everyone, especially those that have older computers.

"Typically, all older machines will not be Y2K compliant," said Kirk Reid, senior field technician at MicroAge in Calgary.

"The exceptions would be some of the brand-name machines like Compaq, IBM and HP. I know that Compaq, for instance, is certifying some of their 3/486 machines. This is, however, the exception, not the rule.

"Some Pentium-class machines will be OK, but you may still need a BIOS update."

There are a couple of neat tricks you can use to simulate the arrival of Year 2000 to see if your system is at risk. One straightforward test involves a simple manipulation of the date and time on your system, suggests Faisal Premji, a systems technician at Voodoo Computers Inc. of Calgary.

If the system has any mission critical data on it that you suspect might be hurt by this test, then be sure to back it up first. Then simply set the time and date on your system to Dec. 31, 1999, at 11:59 p.m.

The best way to do this is to type "date" at the DOS prompt and then "time" and follow the on-screen prompts to make the changes.

"Then turn off your machine. Wait a few minutes, then restart and check the time.

"An estimated four out of five of the PCs using 16-bit Windows will reboot to the year 1980 or 1984," writes Mike Elgan in Windows magazine.

And while you are in the simu-millennium test, run any of the older programs that you have kept around for years to see if they go wacky.

If you encounter any major problems, you might want to take one of several courses of action. Newer machines that are equipped with flash BIOS can be updated with a patch from the manufacturer.

Some non-flash BIOS machines can be fixed by running the Year 2000 tester and patch from RighTime Co. It's free and downloadable

Be sure to read the text file that comes with it before running the fix.

Symantec is also offering a free downloadable BIOS test and fix on their Web site

Symantec also has a very useful utility called Norton 2000 (street price: approximately $70), which routes out all the issues on Windows NT, Windows 95 and 98 machines.

It won't fix the software problems, but it spots issues and rates their severity. In spreadsheets it colourizes cells that are of concern for easy identification.

Racsim

I'm sorry, but after collapsing and rolling on the floor laughing my guts out, I couldn't resist noting down a few comments regarding the quote from an Anti-Hanson web site in todays (8 Jan) @notd.

The author (someone by the name of Ian) obviously doesn't realise that Australia, for the most part, is a class-less society. The class divisions in countries like Singapore is astounding. I spent some time growing up in Singapore when my father received an Army posting their between 1968 and 1972. It was expected of our family to hire domestic support - it was the done think to do. When word got out amongst the Armas of Tangaline Barracks and surrounds that an Australian was seeking to employ someone, the enquiries and queues were staggering. It appears that what we in Australia considered a realistic wage was about 5 times the rate that the locals would pay, and the working conditions almost infinetely better.

This "Ian" guys says "...the asians who migrate to your land are mostly rich and wealthy." He goes on to say that "Most Caucasions have sterotypical views that Asians as 'uneducated' and 'poor' ". Well most people in Asia are poor. This in not a view, it is a fact. The only Asians that can afford the flight to Australia, along with the immigration fees and provisions, are only the rich. And why do they come here? Because the consumer here has more money to spend than the consumer in Singapore.

This moron states that "We live in silk luxury, maids, mercedes , look around our streets- 30% are Mercedes Benzes and furthurmore, they do not come cheap". But maids do come cheap. In fact, these people are treated like slaves by their employers in Singapore. This guy is so detatched from the reality of the the Island. Do the maids have maids? Do the maids drive Mercs? Certainly not with the cost of car registration in Singapore, an Island about the size of the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

I'm glad this "Ian" guy from Singapore has such a rich daddy who can afford him his car and his maid while he is a student. I'm so glad that this spoilt little rich kid can sleep in his silks at night knowing that what is his 'comfort' was bought at the price of millions of people on that island living little better than slaves.

Quote from @notd:

"I do not see why Hanson should view the asians in australia as a major threat. In fact, she should be pleased as the asians who migrate to your land are mostly rich and wealthy. As a teenage singaporean chinese, I share the same views as Mr Justin Ng. It seems as though some Aussies have downright no respect for such hardworking and competent Asians in your country(Jealousy strikes!). Asians in Australia shape the Aussie economy. Without them, your land would perish down under. Most Caucasions have sterotypical (sic) views that Asians as 'uneducated' and 'poor'. I beg to differ. Overseas chinese (me) , are far richer than you white aussies. If we were to bring our wealth to your land(i highly doubt so), you would then know how rich we are. We live in silk luxury, maids, mercedes , look around our streets- 30% are Mercedes Benzes and furthurmore (sic), they do not come cheap. It costs twice as much as what you pay in your land. I qoute (sic), "the land of the DOWN UNDER-----AUSTRALIA REALLY LIVES UP TO HER NAME....!!!

" - Justin Ng. "

Young Liberals call to abolish "Sorry Day"

Dear Editor,

It's interesting to note Young Liberals are calling for National Sorry Day celebrated on 26th May (by some misguided souls) to be abolished. As quoted from "The Age", page 7 from Saturday 9th January: "The WA state president, Mr Alan Dungey, moved the motion for the party to express its extreme dismay about the way pioneer settlers and ancestors were being derided as racist and to condemn the concept of Sorry Day."

Young Liberal delegates at the national conference in Perth voted yesterday to abolish National Sorry Day.

I wonder whether these Liberals will receive the same grilling as One Nation supporters would over a similar party vote?

Stand by for big Mac and Pepsi in Iraq

CALIFORNIA, Dec. 24 - I just finished reading your essay about the recent attacks on Iraq by the United States and Britain. I don't believe the reports about "weapons of mass destruction" being present in Iraq. Instead, my theory is that the Anglo-American empire is trying to use military and economic pressure to persuade Mr. Hussein to make "sovereignty concessions" and thereby essentially become another client state of the empire. It would seem that the motive is to keep Mr. Hussein in power, but persuade him to act as the "puppet" ruler who would act in the interests of the empire. This would include allowing Anglo-American corporations to enter Iraq and build factories and sell goods.

My theory also assumes that the wave of terrorist attacks which have taken place in the United States during the past year, such as sabotage of railroads and bombings of buildings etc., are the work of professional saboteurs financed by Iraq as the only means available to that country to fight back against overwhelming military odds.

If my theory is correct, we will know it when we see idiot box images of Iraqis eating at McDonalds, drinking Pepsi, and shopping at WalMart stores. Note how this has happened to the Chinese and the Russians. The financial juggernaut of this empire appears invincible. I expect it to control the entire world before I pass from the scene.

Unemployment

Dear Sir

At the end of this message, and separated from it by a line of asterisks, are two messages which cause me great concern. Both are advertisements directed to foreigners who wish to work in Australia.

At a time when there are 800,000 people unemployed in this country it seems to be to be criminal to make it harder for Australians to find a job by bringing in foreign workers.

That the Labor party, not to mention the Democrats and unions have nothing to say about it is even more appalling.

Could you please bring this to the attention of interested parties and ask, in Parliament and the media, if the Government supports this kind of thing.

Please feel free to telephone if you need further information.

Yours,
George
