[MURDER BY MEDIA, DEATH OF DEMOCRACY IN AUSTRALIA]

from an Aussie's viewpoint on Australia's first daily Internet newspaper.
Since October 1995

Finally, I know what's wrong with Pauline...

Report on Penrith visit by Chris Fitzgerald.

Here is an extract:

Yes! I know what's wrong with Pauline Hanson - she's an ORDINARY AUSTRALIAN and ordinary Australians aren't respected by politicians. We're only the people the politicians are supposed to represent! We just do the work and pay the taxes that keep this country going! Surely we can't be entitled to representation in our parliaments?

University of Queensland's Queensland Independent cover "Murder by Media"

The Queensland Independent carried two articles on Murder by Media in the paper released over the weekend.

Here are extracts from the two articles:

Bookshop ban shows extraordinary level of involvement: author

There had been involvement in the book's removal by Dymocks chairman, managing director, general manager and company secretary through direct orders, faxes and emails Balson said.

Study in media power an essential Australian text

I don't know, perhaps democracy isn't popular any more, it seems an ugly word these days. There are more profitable ways for society to operate and it just takes too long for things to be done if we let people have a say.

This is classic bureaucratic crap - why should we buy it?

The entire board of the so-called Australian Broadcasting Association, including "Professor" David Flint should be sacked forthwith. No questions asked.

Just weeks ago Flint said, "In considering whether to not to grant approval, the ABA took account of the fact that the breaches were the result of action by persons other than the Packer Interests. The ABA also took account of two undertakings provided to the ABA." It then called for Packer to divest his interests in Fairfax to below the 15% mark - see report below.

Yesterday in a complete about face "Professor" David Flint said, "The ABA is satisfied, after a thorough investigation of the circumstances, that no breach of the Act has occurred" - see report below.

Well son, let's get something quite clear you stand alone in your unilateral decision. And the Australian people have, quite simply, had enough of bureaucratic bullshit.

When asked whether Packer stooge, Fairfax's Chairman Brian Powers, was associated with Packer (through their joint ownership of FXF) Flint replied, "Mr Powers' position is that he now has a CEO in place and he's spending part of his time outside the country.

"So there's nothing that would raise the basis of an investigation but... this matter will remain the subject of ongoing scrutiny by the ABA."

Quite simply put, more bureaucratic bullshit.

In his interview with the ABA made it clear that he still wanted to control Fairfax. "You know I may still buy Fairfax", Packer told the ABA during his interview with them.

"I'd love to control Fairfax. I'd love to run Fairfax. And at any point in time I may do it because, you know, I'm only responsible to you blokes while I have a television station and at any point I can sell the television station and do what I like."

What is quite clear is the ABA Board are divided over whether Packer and Powers are associated - Packer's 30% of the FXF Trust apparently (according to some on the board) does not equate to ownership....

The ABA concluded in its report with the following crap, "To make a finding on this issue, in the absence of a finding that Mr Powers was in a position to exercise control of Fairfax, would serve no useful purpose in terms of this report."

Of course another Packer stooge, Communications Minister Senator Richard Alston, (big mates with that merchant banker Michael Kroger) declared that the ABA's ruling had "closed" the matter of Packer's control of Fairfax.

Mark Westfield writes in today's Australian, "Even a superficial analysis would show that both the cross-media ownership rule which binds Packer and the foreign ownership laws which apply specifically to the media are anti-competitive, whimsical and antiquated."

Westfield, of course,  is pushing the barrow for Murdoch who is feeling left out because he is an "American" and cannot own Fairfax. The issue here should be the break-up of the ownership polarization of this influential industry not fighting over the scraps that these two tyrannical media barons seek at any cost.

To see how beholden the ABA board is to Packer one has to look no further than this classic exchange between Packer and them during the so-called "investigation":

Packer when questioned about his control over Fairfax, "What I find so extraordinary is, if I control Fairfax, do you think they'd run the stories they run about me?"

Says something about the so-called editorial independence of discredited "current affairs" programmes like 60 Minutes.

When asked by an ABA lawyer why the watchdog should be satisfied that he did not control Fairfax Packer responded, "Why should the ABA assume I am?"

The lawyer responds, "Well the test actually works around the other way."

Packer, "The truth of the matter is, why do you assume I can? On what tiny piece of information do you make that suggestion? Tell me what it is?"

Lawyer, "I suppose it is on the basis of a possible shared vision (with Powers)"....

Packer, "A shared vision! We have our own agendas. My agenda is Channel 9. His agenda is Fairfax. The vision is non longer shared. The vision was shared when we were both working for the same company."

Lawyer, "Notwithstanding the common interest in Fairfax?"

Packer, "You know in the FXF Trust I have Au$20 or Au$30 million tied up. And a couple of billion in Channel 9. Which one do you think I'm going to be interested in? Which one do you think I am going to look after?"

Send the ABA an email.

Here is an extract from this press release

The ABA has considered an application by Mr Kerry Packer, Mr James Packer and the Consolidated Press Holdings group of companies (CPH) (collectively, ‘the Packer Interests’) for approval of temporary breaches of the ownership and control rules which have arisen as a result of the buy back agreement between John Fairfax Holdings Limited (Fairfax) and Brierley Investments Limited (BIL). Section 67 of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (the Act) gives the ABA power to approve temporary breaches for a period of six months, one year or two years.

The ABA has decided to allow the Packer Interests six months to rectify the breaches of the cross media rules.

"In considering whether to not to grant approval, the ABA took account of the fact that the breaches were the result of action by persons other than the Packer Interests. The ABA also took account of two undertakings provided to the ABA," said Professor David Flint, ABA Chairman.

Here is an extract from this press release

The ABA has found that neither Mr Brian Powers, Mr Kerry Packer, Mr James Packer, Consolidated Press Holdings, Publishing and Broadcasting Limited nor any related or associated persons committed any breaches of the cross media rules of the Broadcasting Services Act in the period 18 May to 24 August 1998.

"The ABA is satisfied, after a thorough investigation of the circumstances, that no breach of the Act has occurred," said Professor David Flint, ABA Chairman.

The two main issues the ABA examined were the questions of whether Mr Brian Powers was an associate of Mr Kerry Packer, Mr James Packer and the Consolidated Press Holdings group of companies (the Packer interests) during the relevant period and whether Mr Powers was in a position to exercise control of Fairfax.

The ABA has found Mr Brian Powers was not in a position to exercise control of John Fairfax Publications Pty Ltd and David Syme and Co. Ltd in the period.

Reverse Racism:

Here is an extract:

In the U.S. today, a white male cannot utter some truths and expect to keep his job. Indeed, increasingly, white people have to lend their support to lies that serve minority interests in order to hold on to what they have. Even scientific truth has lost out to myths that serve minority interests. In 1966, two college students discovered "Kennewick Man," a 10,000-year-old skeleton in the Columbia riverbank in Washington state. The skeleton was an important scientific find, but, alas, did not fit the race theories of American Indians.

Apparently acting on orders from the Clinton administration and over the objections of Congress and scientists, the Army Corps of Engineers quickly buried the archeological site under 500 tons of rock to prevent further finds. Kennewick Man's bones were dispersed, and some were reburied. Kennewick Man was politically incorrect. His features are not in keeping with those associated with "native Americans," suggesting that there may have been other native Americans who lost out in violent struggles before the white man came. This prospect is inconvenient for theories of "white oppression" that have been concocted to serve Indian group interests. There was nothing for it but to destroy the evidence.

Regional ON Meeting in WA

There was a good turn up for the South West Regional (W.A.)get together last Saturday when we held a BBQ at the Koombana Bay Sailing Clubs' waterside bbq area. The site was fantastic and the weather couldn't have been better. W.A.'s Director,Ted Vermeer and his wife Diane came all the way to Bunbury from Perth along with the President of the newly formed State Executive John MacKinlay. These men all gave us some very encouraging insights into the future of our State as it gets in gear for our election in the next 12 to 18 months. Our State Campaign Director Margie Bass also gave a very inspiring and informative talk on a variety of subjects dealing with pre election strategies. With all these grand people now in place we hope to give our political oponents a real fight. It was great also to meet the editor and publisher of the Guardian. The latest edition of the One Nation magazine the West Australian Guardian went like hot cakes as did the article published in @noted by Graham Strachan entitled "Globalism the Full Programme" proving to me that our folk are starving for One nation publications.

Please Scott keep up the good work and as long as I am able I shall try and distribute it to our WA supporters.

Barbara Shier.
