Issues - The banking system under the spotlight.

International:

The most profitable company in Australia, National Australia Bank Limited, is about to increase its banking fees for its 3.5 million retail customers. Managing director Don Argus sent the bank's shares to record highs to Au$15.51 (a rise of 50 cents on the day) after announcing a strong first-quarter profit.

He took the opportunity to say, "We're looking at revising our transaction charges in the retail bank."

The quarter's better than expected result reflected a 14.3% lift in underlying profit to Au$960 million which translated into a 9.7% lift in earning to 39.4 cents a share.

Despite the big profit lift Argus said that the bank was looking at increasing its fees saying that margins continued to be squeezed by competition.

Now here comes the rub.... many shareholders complained at yesterday's annual meeting about the bank's proposed employee and executive share incentive scheme and option issues.

Even the shareholders - who are making a squillion at the expense of the bank's customers are bleating about the share incentives given to those who run the bank....

Now something is not right here. When the man at the head of the ship profits directly from making bigger returns for shareholders through his incentive package there has got to be a conflict of interest. This new trend is not restricted to National Australia Bank Limited either... to many Australians it represents a feeding frenzy of greed at the top of this pillar of our society.

The issues section which will be posted today will be an ongoing web page looking at the banking sector. If you have a story to tell - this is where you can tell it. Australia need to know what has happened to the trust and fairness that has gone out of this sector of our society for many Australians.

The Aboriginal boys accused of spitting at and assaulting Independent MP for Oxley Pauline Hanson are up to their mischief again.

The older of the boys escaped from Department of Family, Youth and Community Care officers yesterday after he was remanded back into the care of a Sunshine Coast Aboriginal training centre. He told department officers that he was going to the toilet.

The younger boy allegedly abused and threatened a policeman while he was waiting to go to court. The policeman, an Asian, Constable Joseph Nguyen, then allegedly pushed past the boy. The boy's mother has now got into the act saying that their (Australian tax payer paid) solicitor, Don McMillan, would report the policeman to the Criminal Justice Commission.

Yeah and pigs really do fly in Australia.....

Political:

Prime Minister John Howard has been told by Hal Wootten, the National Native Title Tribunal mediator, to learn the Aboriginal traditions so that he can understand how "unutterably monstrous" it was to expropriate native title rights from Aborigines.

Wootten also suggested that it might be time to offer Aborigines mining royalties in exchange for their traditional rights.

Wootten said, "I greatly admire Mr Howard's stand in the gun debate and in particular his refusal to be panicked by loud outcries.

"So it is not altogether surprising that he has not rushed to embrace the proposal to extinguish native title in the vast areas of Australia that are or have been subject to native title.

Mr Howard has had little time to acquaint himself with Aboriginal traditions, but I'm sure that he would appreciate that our western tradition does not countenance the confiscation of the private property rights of one group in the community because they are inconvenient to another group.

"If he were to learn more about Aboriginal traditions he would, I'm sure, realise how unutterably monstrous such an expropriation would be and how utterly irrelevant financial compensation would be."

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Spent last night working on the World Wide Websters with my business partner in this project. Another beautiful day ahead. Tomorrow my wife returns from Perth, Western Australia and, as a treat, I have bought her the most enchanting hand crafted dolls. Actually a work of art. Meet "Gumnut and Willie Willie". The artwork, seen here, stands about 18 inches high and will be displayed in our bedroom.

So at 4.45 am tomorrow morning I will be in the Brisbane domestic air terminal awaiting for her and the internet kid's return....
