Issues - The banking system under the spotlight.

International:

The Coles Myer saga of old has raised its ugly head again with, this time, former Coles Myer chief Bryan Quinn being before the courts on charges of defrauding the company. Quinn is accused of conspiring to defraud Coles Myer of nearly Au$4.5 million after getting extensive renovations for his home done at the company's expense.

Crown prosecutor Paul Coghlan QC said that the case was a "tale of excess and greed" during the opening trial. He said that Quinn was the "driving force" behind the plan to conceal the payments.

Mr Dunn acting in Quinn's defence claimed that he "was not aware of the false invoicing".

Political:

Thirty members of the Wilderness Society and Friends of Hinchinbrook conservation group protested in the Prime Minister's offices yesterday by taking over his electoral office at Gladesville at about 12.30pm..

The group made international phone calls, drank beer and defaced a portrait of the Queen of England.

They had free reign of the office until about 6.10pm when police were finally called to remove them after they had ordered and eaten a pizza. The police found the portrait of the queen decorated with an effigy of Mr Howard replacing the Queen's head with the words "Her Majesty The Queen John Howard" written beneath.

The protestors simply crawled under a glass partition to gain entry into a meeting room. They were protesting the Federal Government's approval of the controversial Port Hinchinbrook Resort development on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef in northern Queensland.

When the police arrived the protestors locked themselves to furniture. After being removed two men and two women were arrested.

Business:

The Reserve Bank has held back on a further rate cut because of fears of a wages blowout in Australia. The bank pointed to the huge wage claims being pursued by the Australian Council of Trade Unions as one of the major reasons why they had not reduced interest rates.

On the stock exchange Australian shares hit an all-time high breaching the 2,500 mark for the first time.

Sport:

International swimmer and world record holder Kieren Perkins is to marry his fiancee in April.

Perkin's fiancee Symantha Liu is pregnant with the baby due later this year. Ms Liu is currently in hospital after suffering abdominal pains but Perkins believes that it is nothing serious.

On the cricket field Queensland bowler Andy Bickel has been overlooked in the first test despite taking five wickets and playing a key role in Australia's win against the South African Western Province team.

The team in the first test will probably be: Mark Taylor (captain), Matthew Hayden, Matthew Elliott, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Greg Blewatt, Michael Bevan, Ian Healey, Shane Warne, Paul Reiffel and Glen McGrath.

If I was a selector I would kick out Taylor, have Bevan as number one and pull in Andy Bickel.... if....

Global Gripe of the day:

The sad state of the local council bureaucracy and the law in Australia.

Here is a copy of a letter sent by email to the editor of the local paper, the Queensland Times yesterday after an editorial appeared yesterday talking about the Ipswich City Council borrowing Au$1.2 million from its reserves for a 12 month Enviro-plan - and the day on which my rowing boat was broken from its moorings and left to drift or sunk. The only constructive result from the large expenditure so far? Two glossy brochures!!!

Dear Sir,

I have been "at war" with "alleged" environmental vandals who have been ripping up the Ipswich City Council parkland on the banks of the Brisbane river opposite our home on four wheel drive vehicles and off-road motor bikes for about three months.

It was thus, with some considerable displeasure, that I read about and got one of the glossy, expensive, full colour brochures called "FROM GREEN TO GOLD".... and to discover that, in part, is where $1.2 million in dollars has gone to support "the environment".

I have now recorded the story of the "alleged" environmental vandals on the Internet on a web site called "Cyber Cop" because of, what I would allege, is their latest action.

My rowing boat has just been torn from its chains at the bottom of our block and left to float adrift down the Brisbane River.

Ok this sounds really funny, but it isn't. It is sad. Since December, as you will see from the reports in the above web site, I have been informing the police about the acts of trespass that have taken place on private Transtate land and have spoken to the Parks and Gardens department at the Ipswich City Council, but I might as well have spoken to a big brick wall. I have also spoken to the "alleged" trespassers in person only to have threats made against the now missing rowing boat - my transport to the other side of the river.

The police told me at the time that the "alleged" trespassers weren't breaking the law and so did the officers at the Ipswich City Council. It was only after some investigative work in my own time that I was through my own endeavours able to:
a) get landowners Transtate to confirm to the police in writing that no one had authority to go across their private property and that, and I quote "if persons are seen on this land or complaints are made, that these persons be removed from the land and if applicable charged with trespassing (I have a copy of the letter to the police).

b) be able to confirm that as (Ipswich City Council controlled) parkland no-one on any form of motorised transport should have been on the property in these vehicles in the first place.

I have pursued the "alleged" environmental vandals, at my own cost, only because of the damage that they have "allegedly" caused on the banks of the Brisbane river. Photographic evidence of this "alleged" damage can be seen on the web site referred to above. The parkland now has discarded cans, rubbish etc... as well as broken bottles scattered on its banks on the Brisbane river.

I have identified the "alleged" environmental vandals by photographing their off-road motor bikes and the riders on the banks of the Brisbane river, taken the vehicle registration numbers and photographed "alleged" four wheel drive vehicles that have ripped up the parkland and also photographed the "alleged" damage that has been caused by these same "alleged" vehicles in the designated Ipswich City Council parkland area.

Yet the police say they cannot act and until now, despite much talk, the ICC department involved have taken no constructive action.

In fact, despite my invitation to view the photographic evidence of damage caused to this parkland the ICC department have not even bothered to come and have "a look see" at either the real thing or the photographic images.

The real irony is that the photograph on page 12 of the expensive "FROM GREEN TO GOLD" glossy brochure of the Brisbane river at Colleges Crossing was taken below the very point where the damage to the parkland is being caused on the river banks above. Yes, right below our home.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another beautiful day in paradise. The birds are singing, the Brisbane river is flowing, but I will once again be visiting the big smoke.....
