International:

After standing on the hull of his boat for 30 hours in near freezing water - before being rescued by fellow yachtsman and friend British yachtsman Peter Goss - Raphael Dinelli said that he will do it all again. He said this at a media conference in Hobart soon after his arrival yesterday. Dinelli said that he would like to compete in the Vendee Globe solo around the world race again - but only if he was assured the safety of his boat.

He also defended his decision to sell his story to several media organisations for 200,000 French Francs (or about Au$50,000). This is about a third of the cost that Australian tax payers have footed when his distress signal was responded to by the Australian RAAF.

He has said that he needs the money to cover his own debts - in relation to the loss of his boat and everything that he had on board.

Meanwhile back on the high seas Frenchman Thierry Dubois used the radio in his liferaft to inform the Australian RAAF that he was safe and waiting for their arrival. The cost of this particular search and rescue mission is now reaching Au$10 million. Now this is totally ludicrous - as I am paying the tax which is going to some foreigner who got himself into trouble thousands of kilometres outside our territorial waters who never has and never will do anything for this country in the future and who has absolutely no obligation to pay back one cent - and he know it.

Here in Australia hundreds of lost jobs could have been saved with this money which is being absolutely wasted.

Political:

On the advice of Crown Law the Queensland State Government has stopped issuing permits and licences on leasehold land following the recent Wik decision. Natural Resources Minister Howard Hobbs said the Federal Government should quickly resolve the problems created by the High Court's decision as "native title paralysis" had now set in.

Hobbs said that leases cover 73% of the state of Queensland and said, "This effects everyone from the Southport Spit on the Gold Coast through to Cape York.."

Queensland's largest law firm, Clayton Utz, said last night that cases should be examined individually with right-to-negotiate procedures of the Native Title Act needing to follow "as a matter of risk management".

Cape York Land Council co-ordinator David Byrne said that Hobbs should take advice from Crown Law with a grain of sand and sit down and talk to Aboriginal people.

Byrne said, "We are prepared to sit down in a way which takes into account each other's interests."

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and other Aboriginal groups yesterday called for a summit on native title. They were confident that a summit would be attended by all major Aboriginal groups, federal, state and territory governments as well as industry and mining organisations.

Yesterday we referred to Brownwyn Bishop's response to the millions of dollars being spent on saving shipwrecked yachtsmen. Our comments prompted this response:

Subject: re Bronwyn Bishop

If God is a woman, does that make Bronwyn Bishop Jesus Christ? Or is that just what we say when we here her name.

Do you know that in August 1996, Bronwyn Bishop visited the Philippines and promised military aid from Australia? Military aid to a country where, in the capital city, Manila, over 90% of the population don't even have running water? Only the rich can take a shower becuase there is only one water pumping station for a city of over 11 million people. Please see attached letter (in word 7 format) to Bishop, written on that subject from me while I was in Manila. This letter has never been replied to.

Jason E. Cole

We strongly recommend that view Jason's letter which never received a response. The letter can be saved to your computer - it is in a Microsoft Word format.

One can only wonder what Bronwyn Bishop's response to the letter would have been if American Rupert Murdoch or our own Kerry Packer had written it? A taxpayer paid personal visit by the aforesaid minister to the letter writer no doubt. Australia? - no just Animal Farm.

Global Gripe of the day:

Tresspassing.

I am just sick and tired of the manner in which people disregard the law. Across the river from the global office is a large tract of beautiful unspoilt river reserve.

There are now a number of tracks leading onto the river reserve - an area which is supposed to be off limits. The police are too busy with murders and rape and the Ipswich City Council cannot enforce the law stopping people trespassing in this area.

I have set up a Cyber-cop web site where incidents, with pictures, will be placed on the Internet and law-breakers exposed in an attempt to try to save the delicate river banks.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another perfect day in paradise.. the parrots are feeding and the sun is shining..

Have a great day!
