International:

A Portuguese coin believed to date back to the 1500s was found yesterday 30 centimetres deep in the sand by Bob King, a professional fossicker, on the Mornington Peninsula west of Melbourne. King used a metal detector to track down the coin which he claims is proof that the Portuguese were the first explorers to map the Australian shoreline.

The find supports the claim by historian Kenneth McIntyre that Portuguese naval commander Christovoa da Mendonca discovered Australia in 1522.

"The coin could be the most important relic to be discovered since the Portuguese maps of the western and southern Australasian coastline dated 1539, were found," said McIntyre.

"I am very hopeful that the coin will turn out to be of great importance."

McIntyre published a book "The secret Discovery of Australia" which claims that Mendonca mapped the coasts of west and southern Australia while pursuing explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Large, medium and small businesses are planning to cut their workforce during the next three months according to an employment expectation survey which predicts the worst conditions for three years.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has previously warned that the gloomy job outlook would continue during 1997.

Federal Opposition spokesman Martin Ferguson yesterday forecast a 9% unemployment rate urging John Howard to reconsider the slashing of Au$1.8 billion in labour market spending.

"The flatness of the jobs market suggests the Prime Minister ought to reconsider the error of his ways and revisit the Government's decision to slash labour market spending," said Ferguson.

"The issue of jobs remains the national number one priority and more and more the Australian community is going to wake up to the fact the industrial relations reforms are nothing but a con and they are not going to lead to a significant growth in jobs."

Personally I believe that we are now moving into the biggest shift in careers since the arrival of the office PC in the 1980s. The traditional work model is changing fast and, with the Internet and other on-line services, more and more people will work from home, work flexi-hours and the whole work ethic as we know it will be thrown upside down by the year 2000.

Political:

The Queensland hospital system is in a state of dissaray according to state Labor Opposition Health Minister Wendy Edmond. Ms Edmond said, "From what I hear, half the senior medical staff there (at Princess Alexandra Hospital) have threatened to resign."

The source of the problem at Queensland's second largest hospital appears to be budgetry constraints with wards being closed down. Mrs Edmond said that elective surgery had ground to a halt in Brisbane over Christmas as Queensland Health "reeled from crisis to crisis".

Business:

Qantas Airlines Ltd is close to selling off its islands off the Queensland coast.

About half the buyers of the Great Keppel, Brampton, Dunk, Bedarra and Lizard resort islands are understood to be based offshore.

Brian Cox of Richard Ellis Real Estate said that the deal was one of the most complex ever seen with multiple factors playing a part in the final result.

Sport:

The tobacco symbol on the bats of the Pakistani cricket team have been banned. The scheme by tobacco manufacturers to circumvent Australian laws on tobacco advertising enfuriated Health Minister Michael Woodridge who informed the Pakistani team that they would be fined Au$60,000 if the Wills Kings logo was displayed at their next international match in Australia.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Once again a magnificent Queensland day after a coolish night.

My wife, son and mother fly to Perth tonight on a direct flight with Ansett Airlines.

Time to visit family and friends on the other side of the content... my work (hobby) at the global office continues.

Have a great day!
