International:

A tourism bonanza is expected in Queensland following the decision by New South Wales to outlaw the handling of koalas by tourists. Queensland currently allows the handling of koalas to continue under strict guidelines at parks like Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There are an estimated 670,000 of the tourists who visit New South Wales each year visiting the state's wildlife parks who could be effected by the handling ban.

The Curator of the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Paul O'Callaghan, said years of research showed that koalas were not harmed by handling.

O'Callaghan said, "We would resist any mandatory bans on koala handling, absolutely. If we thought there was a problem we would stop it ourselves."

The Australian Koala Foundation supported O'Callaghan saying that there was no research which showed that handling proved stressful to koalas.

There are some delightful pictures of koalas at Koala trouble.

Political:

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has predicted that 1997 will be a year torn with strikes and industrial disputes following the stance taken by Coalition Government's at a Federal and (Queensland) State level.

ACTU State Secretary John Thompson said that workers would fight strongly against moves to erode their rights and moves to weaken the union movement.

He described state Industrial Relations Minister Santo Santero as "the root to all evil".

"We're not going to keep taking backward steps - a line has been drawn in the sand," said Thompson.

Santoro responded by saying, "If the unions want to take such action, we will make them accountable for the adverse impact that industrial action would have on employment rates and business confidence."

My wife's own experience with the union movement is far from being a happy one. She works on a part-time basis for a university, is forced to pay exhorbitant "union dues" (deducted before she is paid) without any consultation, and has had absolutely no contact or feedback from her "union" as to what services she is getting for her fees.

Sport:

Well the Australian cricket team blew it again! Yesterday we had captain Mark Taylor "bragging" how well "he" was hitting the ball and at the same time slamming the media for negative reporting...

After yesterday's match I think that the whole Australian team should pull there heads in a bit and work out what's going wrong. From opening batsman and captain Mark Taylor down they blew chances and were bundled out in just 47 overs for 199 runs. The Pakistani team played well and were always in control winning easily with opener Sohail scoring over 50 runs.

There was one glimour of hope in the Australian side with spinner Shane Warne taking out the man of the match award after spinning his magic through the Pakistani team - taking four wickets - where all other Australian bowlers failed miserably.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Gentle rain falling overnight and at the start of today. The clouds are now starting to clear.

Another perfect Queensland day ahead. Have a good one.
