International:

News Limited's SUPER LEAGUE is dead.

The Federal Court judge outlawed Super League yesterday in a decision which has thrown the international rugby league program into chaos. Not only is it dead in Australia, but it has been outlawed all over the world. There is no love lost between the Australian Rugby League, ARL, (backed by Kerry Packer's Channel 9 and Optus Pay TV) and Rupert Murdoch's Super League. The bit players in all this, the world's leading rugby league stars who signed with Super League are now being wooed back to the ARL with the new season due to start this Saturday being delayed by a few weeks.

Murdoch must be spitting chips and also watching the hundred of million of dollars just flying out the door. The loss certainly won't help Murdoch's Foxtel Pay TV.

Political - Federal Election 2nd March 1996:

The ABC are going to cover the Federal Election live

Well we are now right into the business end of the election. Prime Minister Paul Keating is putting on a brave face but I find it hard to see how he can win this one.

At a critical time for Labor to put in a couple of good media punches our whole world is dominated by the ARL - Super League fracas as the media barons thump their proverbial chests with gusto and brovado in their quest to win our hearts and minds.

Paul Keating did, however, get off lightly for a cheap shot at John Howard at a sports function claiming that Howard went into last weekend's debate all pumped up with amphetamines. To make matters worse he said at the Prime Ministerial Women and Sports Award that "he was happy to be at a function where they weren't handing out amphetamines at the door." In the light of the evening's winner, Sam Riley, recent positive drug test the jibe did not raise any laughter..

Business:

Well we have all got to go at some time. Laurie Connell one of the masterminds behind the close "financial relationship" between the rich in Western Australia and the state Labor Party died yesterday of a heart attack. Connell was the key behind the infamous scandal called WA Inc. His Rothwell Investment house caused the ruin of many legitimate businesses and the loss of savings of mums and dads. He had by his own admission "become a professional litigant". Corrupt Labor Premier at the time, Brian Burke, said "he would never want to get between Connell and a bag of money."

Sport:

Well Australia took out their match against India last night winning by 258 runs to 242. Australian opening batsman Mark Waugh scored a fantastic 128 runs before being run out. Waugh scored the first consecutive century innings in a World Cup series.

Social:

An internal police investigation has revealed that some police in Queensland are using the services of prostitutes. An internal memo from acting Deputy Commissioner Graham Williams said: "It has come to notice through recent investigations that there are indications that some serving officers may be using the service of prostitutes." So what else is new in the world. The concern appears to stem from the possibility of Police being corrupted by their actions..

Personal trivia:

Lovely cool day yesterday. The Brisbane river valley was shrouded in mist this morning. In our quiet little part of the world it was like a scene out of one of those Science Fiction pictures where a UFO rises out of the swirling mist. Remove the UFO and you have the picture!
