Today's Headlines
Tuesday 26th March 1996
International:
Australian Fashion Week (AFW) was launched yesterday at Sydney's Regent amid much fanfare. AFW starts with five days of fashion
parades in May featuring the nation's most innovative designers. Among the 30 fashion houses selected to show their wares are:
Saba, Bettina Liano, Jodie Boffa, Collette Dingham and Brave. Local and overseas buyers from department stores including
Barney's New York, Land Crawford in Singapore and Tangs in Hong Kong will be there.
Political:
Well in less than a month of gaining power in the Federal Election the Coalition have achieved what Keating and his mob tried and
failed to do. Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir flew into Darwin to meet with Foreign Minister Alexander Downer. The meeting was
dominated by trade and education issues. The main issues discussed were:
- A new bilateral trade agreement to update the existing 1958 version.
- The Transfield bid for the supply of offshore patrol boats to the Malaysian navy.
- The importance of education links between Australia and Malaysia.
Business:
BHP Chief Executive John Prescott has moved to stop the slide of the shares by briefing stockbroking analysts in the wake of the company's
disappointing third quarter profit performance which knocked a further Au$120 million from its market capitalisation in trading yesterday.
Stung by the savage reaction to the poor showing by BHP in the third quarter Mr Prescott has made communication with the market a
higher priority.
Sport:
"Never" is a long time. Within a few hours of the Federal Court ruling that the Super League players cannot be paid if they played in
Global League they all pulled the plug on the great walk out and voted, somewhat reluctantly, to return to the fold.
The big question is where does that leave Murdoch, Joe Ribot and the other big guns who plotted against the Australian Rugby League establishment? Are they
forever in the wilderness... somehow I doubt it. I think that the rot has now set in and that News Limited will play a waiting game before they
pounce once again. Murdoch doesn't give up that easy.
Social:
All states except New South Wales have failed to tackle the effect of global warming is a new claim by the Australian
Conservation Movement. The findings, based on a scorecard of points rates states like Western Australia and Tasmania as very poor
with New South Wales achieving a fair. Sounds like a school report to me!
Personal trivia:
Quick trip down to the Gold Coast yesterday to go and see some business clients. A nice diversion from the big smoke which
became a daily habit last week! Another perfect day today with sunny skies and, yes - you guessed it, sparkling clear waters
below!
Actually the climate at this time of the year is absolutely great - not the obsessive humidity of the December to February months
just warm splendid days and cool nights!
