Today Australia celebrates National Australia Day the day of the official claim by Governor Phillip in 1788
of the colony of New South Wales. For ex-pats who would like to join in a global chat check out CYBERNET Café - Melbourne which has organised a linkup with 30 Cyber Cafés from around the world.
Political:
Well it appears that Prime Minister Paul Keating will announce the date for the Federal
Election this weekend with March the 2nd the most likely date.
Business:
National Australia Bank lifted its profits for the last quarter by 11.8%. As a business dealing with that bank I can
understand why. We required a small short term loan for Au$5,000 for expansion and paid over 10% of that amount just in related loan raising bank charges!
Sport:
The Australian Tennis Open is heating up with Monica Seles meeting Anke Huber in the women's final.
Global Gripe of the day:
Dropping the bomb on someone else's backyard:
I am not alone when I express the viewpoint that the French have a total disregard for the feelings or wishes of a community whose livelihood might be put at risk by their actions.
For a community who are so protective of their culture - with special laws in place to protect French customs from being dissipated by nasty American ways - their
display of selfishness is extreme. It doesn't say much for the leadership when, in the face of continued international outrage, they explode nucleur devices under a
remote Pacific Island atoll - Mururoa. Their claims that the local people don't mind are, quite frankly, bullshit. The only reason the local islander communities put up
with it is, sadly, because they have come to depend on the money that pours into the local businesses when the French are doing something at the atoll. Their claims that the nuclear tests are safe
should be put to the test by setting the bomb off back in France, Europe not in some remote island colony being abused by this colonial power. One wonders how long
the political masters would remain so if that idea was put to the test.
Personal trivia:
It was a really hot day yesterday and it looks like being the same today. The sky is blue and it looks like making for a perfect day to celebrate Australia Day.
