Remember the National Australia Day festivities start tomorrow. The fireworks display over
Sysdney Harbour Bridge is traditionally one of the most spectacular sights to be seen.
Political:
Prime Minister Paul Keating yesterday made an obvious bid for the green "environmental" vote
putting forward a Au$463 million package of funding for green issues. The main areas which would receive financial aid under his proposals are the Murray-Darling
basin with a Au$98 million boost to combat salinity in the region; Landcare programmes with an extra Au$176.5 million and better management of World Heritage Sites.
Business:
The Westpac directors have won their fight for a 25% increase in fees despite a shareholder backlash. Westpac were
once the biggest Australian bank but have, since the late 1980s usurped that position to the major's like National
Australia Bank.
Sport:
Mark Woodforde became the first local player to make it to the semi-finals of the Australian Tennis Open when he upset seventh seeded Thomas Enqvist at Flinders Park last night.
Social:
A report just released suggests that Telstra should be made exempt from the Freedom of Information regulations which
have been brought in to combat corruption at high levels in public office. It made the point that Telstra is competing in commercial circles and would find it hard to
be competitive if it had to reveal its commercial intentions through FOI.
Personal trivia:
Lovely cool day for a chage yesterday with soft rain falling through most of it. Busy day at the global office with people coming in and out and the team
having some fun at the expense of a rather interesting web site (which will remain annonymous) on the Net! 1996 is starting with a bang and looks like
being a great year for our business. We hit a landmark earlier in the week with our our home page recording its 3millionth
visitor in just 6 months!
