International:

This week Australia celebrates Australia Day. It is a time to celebrate the settling of Australia by the British. At this time a couple of strange ironies come to mind. The first that the Australian Republic move has become such a hot political issue and the second that those spoilt Royals are doing their level best to create support for the republic here. Those early explorers like Captain Cook would turn in their graves if they could see what has happened to the old British Commonwealth today.

Political:

The Liberal/National coalition promised not to introduce up-front university fees yesterday, this was a major shift from the original fee paying policy which caused them to lose a large percentage of the student vote in the last Federal Election.

Business:

The business confidence in Australia has plumetted to new depths sparking predictions of rising unemployment while the Federal Government prepares its case to win back the confidence of the voters of Australia. Opposition leader John Howard lashed out at Paul Keating yesterday calling him a "knocker" who did not have solutions to Australia's problems. There is a strange irony, I must confess, that our Prime Minister leaps around Asia with big picture strategies when the ship appears to be sinking at home.

Sport:

The Australian Tennis Open is heating up with both last year's winner, Andre Agassi, and Jim Courier being forced to fight to the wire to continue to the quarter finals.
The cricket scene is looking really bad with relations between Sri Lanka and Australia reaching a new low. Australia is now officially considering boycotting the World Cup after the Sri Lankan vice-captain Aravinda de Silva, rejected Australian captain's handshake at the presentations after Australia won the World Series Cup.

Social:

Pleasant smells can reduce tension, depression and confusion in middle-aged women, new research shows. All of 56 women studied reported being in better moods, recalling happier memories and reflecting a greater desire to help others under these conditions. The cause appears to be an overlap in the part of our brain which processed odours with the part that processed information on emotions.

Global Gripe of the day:

Those spoilt royals:
Personally I find it quite amazing that the like of Fergi and Princess Di float around the world like some kind of flotsam in the wind spending money with reckless abandon, building up debts that somenoe else has to pay with the threat of "selling-out" their story to the highest bidder if the Royal family does not pick up the tab. Princess Di, well known for her media manipulation is a poor starter, it would appear, when it comes to the high living antics of Fergi. Pity they aren't brought down to ground - made to get a proper job, live in a small suburban house like the rest of us and brought back to earth with a bump.

Personal trivia:

Another hot day in the mid-30s yesterday. We are expecting rain later this week and, believe me, it will be most welcome after the continuous run of scorchers that we are experiencing. For our many friends in the northern hemisphere experiencing -28 degrees and more, its a pity we can't trade places for just a day! The sun is shining brightly again today and it is already, at 6.30am, very warm.
