International:
Australian Rugby League (ARL) clubs will meet today to discuss a surprise peace package put forward by the Super League players as conditions
under which they would return to the fold to play out the remainder of this season. Ken Arthurton the ARL chairman boosted by his major
wins over the Super League in the Federal Court has suggested that the plan is worth consideration but has pointed out that some of
the requests are 'unacceptable'.
The proposals by the Super League players include:
- Players take part in the ARL season despite the outcome in the courts.
- Competition to be administered solely by the ARL and the New South Wales Rugby League.
- 22 team competition to include Super League clubs Hunter Mariners and Adelaide Rams.
- Super League players be free to play in any test or international club matches not involving the ARL.
- Test series between Australia and New Zealand not to include any Super League players.
- New three way New South Wales, Queensland, New Zealand competition only to include Super League players.
- Super League teams to wear own jerseys with their own numbers.
- Foxtel be allowed to broadcast some of the games.
Political:
John Howard has picked Kirribilli overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge as his official place of residence. This is a big change from
the traditional home of Prime Ministers at the Lodge in Canberra. If it weren't for the cost of securing his own home Howard expressed
the view that he would rather have remained there. These cost estimations amounted to a staggering Au$1 million!
Business:
Newcrest Mining has effectively blocked the Normandy Group of companies attempt at a Au$4 billion merger. Newcrest bought
Au$450 million in shares in Normandy, PosGold and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie to buy voting power in blocking the proposed move
by the group. The talk around town is that Newcrest will now attempt a reverse take over of the Normandy Group in the near future.
Newcrest now owns 79.75 million shares in Normandy.
Sport:
With the world cup won by Sri Lanka it is time for a quick reflection on some of the highlights like:
Mark Waugh's consecutive centuries a first in this level of limited overs cricket.
Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya's extraordinary 82 runs from just 44 balls.
Keith Arthurton who won the dubious honour of being the Least Valuable Player of the series with scores of 1, 0, 0, 1 and 0!
and some iof the 'low lights' like:
the English test and county cricket board still refusing to accept one day cricket at home.
India's wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia who talked continuously through every single match he played in.
The appearance of the throwing Sri Lankan spin bowler, Muttiah Muralidharan.
Social:
The fate of 2000 koalas hung in the balance last night as a row broke out over controversial South Australian Liberal government
native species culling legislation. The koala population on Kangaroo Island near Adelaide has reached 5000 and the marsupials are
now eating themselves out of existence as each koala consumes 1 kilogram of leaves each day.

Personal trivia:
We had a visit from a good friend of ours last night. Barry Corrick landed up spending the night on the sofa downstairs after a most
enjoyable evening "chewing the fat" over new technology and its direction and opportunities. Today looks like being another warm but
pleasant experience - even though business dictates that I call into the big smoke this afternoon.
