International:

Gold Coast tourist operators have joined industry authorities in an Au$700,000 bid to draw domestic and international holiday-makers back to the Coast during the Australian winter. A nationwide advertising campaign will play a major role during the Australian winter months. Qantas recently announced that Sydney, site of the 2000 Olympic Games, has replaced the Gold Coast as the favourite holiday destination for domestic tourists.

Political - Federal Election 2nd March 1996:

Well tonight is the night of the big debate on Channel 9 and the ABC. At 7.30pm Queensland time (8.30pm in New South Wales and Victoria) Paul Keating and John Howard will stand "toe-to-toe" and debate over which party should win the next election and why. To make things even more interesting the famous "worm" that destroyed Liberal leader John Hewson during the live debates in 1993 will be displayed on Channel 9. The worm is a line moving across the bottom of the television screen which records the average negative or positive views of one hundred randomely selected viewers. The line is put on an axis and clearly display which of the leaders is getting the upper hand in the eyes of the viewers. In 1993 John Hewson suffered the on-screen trauma of seeing Paul Keating annihalate him with some of the answers and jibes. By the end of the debate he was a wreck - and many believe that the worm cost the Liberals the election.
In John Howard Paul Keating faces a far more brazen and smart foe who I think will turn the tables on the PM.

Business:

Virgin Cola the brainchild of British tycoon Richard Branson will make its debut in Queensland. In Queensland over Au$320 million of cola is sold every year. Personally I think that Branson missed the mark. If he had launched it in October before summer set in he would have made a killing. With the heat we have faced over the last month even Idi Amin would have made money out of selling cool drink in this state.

Sport:

Well the Indians are now getting dirty. The Australian cricketers arrived in Calcutta last night to a Au$30 million compensation claim if they refused to play their first scheduled World Cup match in Sri Lanka. The claim is regarded by many as a lever to try to force the Aussies into playing their against their wills and against their better judgement.

Social:

It appears that even in the land of Oz what we say gives us away! Listed below is slang used in different states on the east coast of Australia:

Personal trivia:

Lovely cool day yesterday. What a change! After weeks of intense heat and humidity it looks like today will be marginally cooler as well - even though the sun is shining brightly in a clear blue sky.
