Well the Qantas staff have voted to return back to work after yesterday's 14 hour stoppage effected international air traffic to and from Australia. With the proposed floaf of Qantas by the Federal Labor
Government later this year (to reduce our budget deficit) they have ordered Qantas management to reduce costs by at least Au$300 million. Don't think that I will be
depending on Qantas as my carrier if the staff strike over a few dollars in a meal ticket!
Political:
The Federal Coalition yesterday released the background to its industrial relations policy showing how it will guarantee that workers will not be worse off
under a Liberal/National coalition. His announcement undermined the Labor party's fear campaign that, if the Coalition was elected, they would lose overtime
benefits and penalty rates. Obviously Prime Minister Paul Keating is holidaying somewhere because he has not bothered to respond as yet. What a life, what a legend!
Business:
The banking sector could swell by Au$5 billion in the next twelve months if a number of proposed new listings and capital raisings come to fruition.
Yesterday Perth-based BankWest (previously the Rural and Industries bank owned by the people of Western Australia) went to the market with its main aim to attract
Mum and Dad investors.
Sport:
Last year's Australian Open winner, Andre Agassi, arrived in Australia yesterday ready to defend his Australian Open Tennis
title. Agassi has not played tennis for several months after injuring a chest muscle while representing the American Davis Cup Team last year. Agassi was
confident of retaining his title.
Social:
Employment growth in Australia will take a substantial dive over the next six months analysts predicted yesterday. The ANZ Bank survey in December showed
a 1.8% fall in employment opportunities being advertised.
Personal trivia:
Spent most of yesterday rumbling around the big city... Brisbane. Feel sorry for those people who work there as I look out my peaceful window here at my global office.
We had rain most of yeaterday and its raining again today. This is the wettest period I have ever experienced in my 18 months in this beautiful state. We had a couple
of campers camping in the park across the river. It must have been a most unhappy experience. Imagine the wet undersheet, dripping rain on the tarpaulin and all
those spidies and creepy crawlies that camp on river banks. I guess they would be looking for a dry place to spend the night as well! They (the campers) left very
early this morning!
