International:

Now here's a story which shows what an ass the law is. Alan Bond, whose failed multi billion dollar business cost thousands of share holders their life savings, has through his QC told the Australian Government that they are acting outside the law. The government agencies have been trying to track down the alleged money trail of money which was apparently siphoned from the ailing company back in the 1980s. Their search has taken them overseas to Switzerland where Alan Bond allegedly has a stash of cash hidden. His QC reckons that Bond was "never legally bankrupt" so their search is illegal. Applying for an injunction to stop the search Bond's QC said that "it was an abuse of power and unauthorised by law." Keep at it boys you must be getting close...

Political - Federal Election 2nd March 1996:

Today we return to the Federal Election antics of our top leaders fighting for ultimate power on March 2nd and comments that they made about each other yesterday. Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating, famous for his put-downs said of John Howard: "The problem with John Howard has got is he is pretending to be not the same person he has been for 20 years." (Not bad for the once-Federal Treasurer who nearly resigned in the mid 1980s because Bob Hawke wouldn't accept his GST plan - then slated the opposition for the same thing back in the lead-up to the 1993 election!)
Liberal leader John Howard had this to say: "You judge somebody's leadership by what he or she does with it and if you applied that to Paul Keating, he's been a failed leader." (Interesting that John Howard was leader of the Liberal party in the 1980s and was dumped by his own party - for failing!)

Business:

Another ongoing big business saga is to be fought in the high court in Sydney with Australia's richest man fighting for ownership of the Sydney Casino in the high court. This little legal circus has being going on since 1994 when the casino licence went to Sydney Harbour Casino Pty Ltd with construction group Leighton Holdings and US Casino operator Showboat Inc as founding partners. Packer's spending prowess and gambling habits in the casino of the world are legend. However, it is hard to see how he will win this one. As Peter Grimshaw, Sydney Harbour Casino's public relations director put it: "We just do not believe that there is any merit in the case." Sorry boys, you forgot that THIS casino is in Packer's backyard!

Sport:

The Australian cricket team have, following the devastating bomb blast in Colombo last week, decided to forgoe the game in Sri Lanka in the up and coming World Cup. They have offered to play the Sri Lankan team in India, but the Sri Lankan cricket board have refused to change the venue - an easy way to make 2 points.

Social:

Australians are wealthier now than they were a year ago, mostly because the country as a whole now owns a larger stock of housing which is worth little more than it did last year. The latest assessment by the Commonwealth Treasury puts the nominal net worth of Australia's private wealth at Au$1,753.2 billion or Au$97,100 per person.

Personal trivia:

Our son, 5 year old Alex, was covered in the National papers today. The Australian newspaper carried a story on his Koala Trouble web site under the heading THE WORLD'S YOUNGEST WEB BUILDER.
Well while Tasmania is being lashed by cyclonic storms eminating from the Antartic ice sheet, Queenslanders had another hot one yesterday. This morning we had a cool change with a bit of rain. But with temperatures expected to be in the high 20s, it looks like much of the same to me.
